Need ideas for how I should construct my website

Question

Ok, so the idea is simple, I have a domain/hosting and want to make a website that will feature:

  • Portfolio (Graphic/Music/etc)
  • Blog
  • Forum
  • etc... etc...

So now I am wondering what kind of system to use? My initial idea was to have a front-end to the website, made by myself. This would feature like my latest "top 5" portfolio submissions/blog updates/forum thread; while also giving links to each one. This would however take time for me to make, and after reading this magazine I got on WordPress would be pointless when I could do the same thing by using WordPress itself.

I noticed that there are various templates for this which will allow me to integrate a portfolio and blog seamlessly, while I can still have a link to my forum and such in the navigation section.

What path would you recommend I to take?

I personally use wordpress and zenphoto, for a blog and portfolio respectfully. They integrate ridiculously well.

Zenphoto is media-capable, meaning you can have music/video posts as well as images.

I think there's a Wordpress specific forum, BBPress I think it's called. Not sure how good it is. Should be fairly effortless to integrate though.

If you're privy to php I'd recommend you check out Zenpressed for displaying your latest portfolio posts on a wordpress page. It's super easy to hack and you can pretty much output the latest X posts in any way. Last week I made it display the photos in a UL, which I then used EasySlider to turn in to a jQuery slider, along with the title and category in a caption.

That looks perfect! Exactly what I need to intergrate them together.

Thanks Baines, I think I will definitely be working with what you have told me about here :)
