MxxCon
Let's say you're a really small operation. You've got one server and you want to connect it the Internet. Obviously you're going to need a firewall. Do you need a whole separate system for it?While many people will say that you should pull out an old 486 box and run IPTables for Linux on it, that's not what most people do. One thing they may do, as envisioned by Microsoft in their recently revealed Small Business Server 2003, is to run the firewall on the same box as their production and web server software. read more: http://security.ziffdavis.com/article2/0,3...,1140032,00.asp good read.. rezza Veteran Posted July 8, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 8, 2003 well ok, if you insist, i'll give you a more serious reply. the idea of using separate firewalls on individual servers inside your network isn't a new one, but i think its a pretty good idea. its not going to cost your server much overhead, and adds protection to critical systems. i personally would still run a dedicated firewall box in front of the rest of the network though... i wouldn't rely solely on the NAT server's built-in firewall - i'd just feel more secure with a dedicated one in there.
