Best Rapper With Best Flow

Recommended Posts

Not only have your signatures made it blatantly clear that you do think "rap" is terrible, but you've just suggested that a hip-hop artist cannot be a genius in his field. From what I've seen in the past you appear to analyze music with reason and listen intelligently (though I have not always agreed with your choices), discerning with thought--and not purely emotion--what you like or do not like. Therefore it disappoints me greatly that you have made the choice to oust an entire (and enormous) genre of music from your life. The way that many artists play with words, both grammatically and metaphorically, is often unbelievable. Have you ever heard somebody, while rhyming eleven corresponding syllables in two lines, weave a ridiculously coherent and thought-provoking story? It makes me quiver and shake inside. I am a hip-hop artist myself, but my influences range from Frank Zappa to Tool to Junior Brown to Big Punisher. Open yourself up to different types of creativity and different types of music, coming from extremely different cultures, and you will only understand and appreciate the things that you like now even more.

Well Put. mw_jon . Well Put.

jesus christ.. very nicely put.. (Y)

just out of curiosity, what are some of your favorite artists? (in any genre)

I appreciate it, man.

I often have a hard time with the "favorite artists" thing, but...

...here are my favorite ****ing artists:

Hip-hop:

Lyrics and flow:

Big Punisher (Capital Punishment, along with some painfully amazing freestyles)

Nas (Illmatic, pieces of It was Written)

Blackalicious

Slick Rick (The Art of Storytelling)

Lyrics:

Street Reportas (The only tolerable group I've managed to find on mp3.com)

Eminem (Infinite, The Slim Shady LP)

De La Soul (Three Feet High and Rising)

Flow:

Method Man

Biggie Smalls

Guru (on and off)

Production:

DJ Premier

Prince Paul

Erik B.

Dr. Dre's work on a few specific albums

Otherwise:

Frank Zappa (Almost seventy albums)

Tool

Jimi Hendrix

Led Zeppelin (particularly in terms of instrumentation)

Junior Brown

That's as comprehensive as I can get right now, but there are many, many more. I like plenty of apsects of other's work, but could not put any of it on a favorites list.

Also: I hate to list album titles, but, unfortunately I've seen too many artists degrade over time. Some, however, are listed because of progress. That is always beautiful. I'll list some more **** another time.

Props to you guys from mentioning Gift of Gab form Blackalicious. Alphabet Aerobics, and the sequel to that Chemical Calisthenics seem to be most popular form him, but listen to all his other stuff (one of his first songs, Swan Lake, is what got him recofnized - smooooth... another cool song from him is Touch the Stars). Also, listen to the whole Quannum crew if you like him, they all do songs together pretty often (Quannum consists of Blackalicious [ Gift of Gab & Chrief Xcel ], Latyrx [ Lateef & Lyrics Born ], and DJ Shadow). You'll be blown away by the way these guys handle their music and lyrics.

Switching to another non-Quannum topic, it seems that a lot of people like to listen to Rap and not true Hip-Hop. I like to make the distinction that way between people who stay true to the music and people who sell out. I mean, Busta's good, but songs like Pass the Courvoisier w/P. Diddy... good for a club jam I guess. Not saying there aren't good mainstream people, but people get the wrong impression of hip-hop from these hip-pop people.

Now for people to listen to (maintream or non-mainstream). Check out the Hieroglyphics crew (someone mentioned Del the Funky Homosapien earlier), Guru from Gang Starr (or all of Gang Starr, since it's only two people like Blackalicious), the Mountain Brothers, The Roots, Bahamadia, A Tribe Called Quest, the Quannum crew, older Rawkus records stuff (Mos-Def), and I'll come up with more later.

Since I can't really pick a best, I'll just mention those since I listen to these people pretty often =p

Illmatic - Is One of my favorite albums. Good choice. :)

Yes. Those beats were ridiculously low-fidelity Illmatic rip-offs. It's too bad that Eminem has forgotten that he can explore different ideas. He could truly pull off some amazing things if he opened up to everything that is available to him.

How about some female EmCee's?

my favorite would have to be Anita from Makiza.. i doubt anyone has heard of them.. theyre an amazing Hip Hop/Funk/Soul group from Chile (in Spanish, of course :p).. check out "Chupaya 99" or "Gigolo" to know where im coming from..

also Lauryn Hill is one of the greatest female MCs.. shes truly got an amazing talent behind her..

and i guess Da Brat and Foxy are somewhere in there too..

not many to chose from, unfortunately.. :(

someone indulge me on this topic..

i agree about 50cent... he has no talent what so ever. The only talent he has are behind the scenes (dre and eminem)

for best/most creative lyrics

Dre Dog aka Andre Nickatina

Tech N9ne

San Quinn

JT The Bigga Figga

Get Low Playaz

K-Rino (from Dallas)

Lil Flip (beleive it or not, this guy can freestyle for hours and hours (aka the freestyle king), dont judge him by his latest songs)

Mac Dre (not the best, but funny)

Tommy Wright III

Playa Fly

X-zibit (before he sold out... paparazzi is one of my fav songs)

*edit* whoever was talking about Twista being fast... Listen to Z-Ro, the song is called "Guerilla Till I Die" he goes from slow to fast, listen to the whole song, but the last 1:30min he goes crazy

50 cent is probably the "hottest" rapper at the moment but yeah he doesn't have any talent. Not sure who's the best rapper really.

i agree i think Big L was one of the best at his starting point, also Mos Def is a very Lyrical rapper he has some good talent in that IMO, and on another note i think Method Man was good at one point when he started with the rapping thing then after he got into showbiz everything went down hill for him, and as someone else said before Em could have good talent if he was to explore some other ideas flying around i guessbut for now i say my fav and imo some of the best rappers to have been or still are, are Big L, Biggie, Tupac, Meth, Ol Dirty (hilarious character aka Gurt McGurt i think is spelled), Mos Def, thats all i can think of now.

I am not really into the new style of rap, which I feel is more of a rant and truely does not flow.

As far as flow, Snoop and Dre cannot be beat. The Cronic will always be a classic.

Someone mentioned Slick Rick...very smooth. Also, Chuck D of P.E. and R.I.P. Eazy E.
