Study: 'Extreme Gamers' play 48 hours a week

Treemonster, you are hilarious.

since you spend so little time on pc games then you admit to being ignorant of the level community inherent in many pc games.

How much time do you spend on the console for multiplayer games?

Nope. I am 38. Was a PC gamer for MANY MANY years and part of MANY MANY communities.

and last i checked consoles DO NOT have dedicated servers. which is the basic requirement for regular pubs and clan only servers. you might have options to play with a regular group of people or a clan only game, but it's really not the same considering the server side mod options for pc games.

Some do, some don't. A prime example of an upcoming dedicated server game is Gears of War 3. A great example of some games that we have now with dedicated servers and clans would be MAG, Uncharted 2 and SOCOM Confrontation (there are many more). They have regular server lists, clans, you name it. All on console.

Who said a "friends list" was a "game community." Actually you know what, do you even play on the console or no? Have you ever been apart of any clan/guild/etc that's based around a console game? Is your answer no? Yeah that's probably why your assumptions are so far off base.

Just because you can't "see" someone playing that many hours does not mean it's not true. In the couple years I just played Halo 3 alone, I racked in over 4500+ HOURS of matchmaking, custom games and campaign.

I was in two different clans and god knows how many online communities solely based on MLG and Halo 3.

The rock you're sitting under can use a turnover every once in awhile.

how long did you spend in each clan and community? how well did you get to know the members of that community? did you talk outside of the game? did they have websites/forums to chat on? fun non serious activities in game? community driven videos/machinima? league play?

you obviously spent a great deal of time in those games. good for you. you make wow nerds look like they have irls.

look i could spend that much time playing a mindless f2p mmo solo. and many do. i can't see people doing it but they do.

fact of the matter is pc gaming communities have been in an entirely different league from what console gaming communities are even today for years.

You should attend some of the awesome console LAN parties that we attend around the world, where we meet in real life after meeting online and playing, talking, have our own websites, clan leaderboards and forums. Community videos, etc. We do it all.

It's not a fact, but we can agree to disagree.

those features are certainly not advertised. are you sure you're not confusing a matchmaking room with a dedi server? where does one get the software for these dedicated servers? are there server side mods? in game admin commands? is there community made mods such as zombie mode et al? custom community made maps? so on and so forth?

and i've spent enough time on consoles to realize they don't have the same options as pc gamers when it comes to community building. it's part of the reason i treat the console for what it is, a kiddie toy. it's ok for some games that should be brought to PC and aren't FPS. but it's not something i can take seriously.

inb4 controller vs mouse/keyboard argument.

I bet this 4% also has a personality prone to addiction.

I am addicted to computer games. But i never got addicted to cigs, weed, alcohol, coke, meth during my high school years. PC's are a helluva drug.

1.) I STILL am in the community after 6 years. I'm no longer in the clans because I'm not active with Halo 3 anymore. I was in them for 4+ years though.

2.) I met 50+ of them through various MLG events, tourneys and just basic get togethers. We talked in IRC, IM, phone, text, etc. Heck, even one of them that I had I met through my clan, found out we lived near, hung out and then dated for awhile.

3.) Every clan/community had their own website (and I'm not sure wtf that has to do with anything but.. for what it's worth how the **** do you have a clan/community without a website?), forum, shoutbox/chat, etc.

4.) Community driven videos/Machinima[.com]? I AM ROFLing that you bring up Machinima. You should be able to answer your own question with Machinima right there. If you can't, then you're really closeminded.

GOOGLE.

Stop thinking about just YOUR opinion of it being mindless.

Lightweights I did 72 hours in one week (3 days straight) and then whatever other gaming game up that week, I kinda lost count

Only ever did that once though as I really felt the hurt afterwards, and I could not do anything near that ever again now :D

The game wasn't that great either looking back at it now

I Do that... of course 45 of the 48 hours of that is playing the games i MAKE and don't actually get to enjoy playing very much so I don't think I count...

48 hours a week is pretty intense. Even when I was unemployed, the most I ever did was about 25 hours a week. Nowadays it's about 12 hours.

Either way, the assertion that you need to put in that kind of time in order to be considered a "hardcore" gamer is completely ridiculous. "Hardcore" in the gaming sense is one of those intangible terms that everybody has their own personal interpretation of.

I usually play an average of 133 hours per week on vacation. Only now that I knew that I'm a bit much more than a regular gamer.

So you sleep 5 hrs a day and do absolutly nothing else?

Oh man, I remember when I played that crazy. I was close to closing a sponsorship deal for a CS:S team back in 05. Good times! I ranked in maybe 40 hours easy.

crazy. they need to get out of their parents' basement and get a real life or a job.

Strange. The only reason I could play games and skip school was because I had my own house away from my parents during my gaming frenzy years. All that supported by a business I ran sending cheap clothing from Thailand to a friend of mine in the southern US, and reselling at a steep price (think its illegal but meh). So I think that with the business self sustained and a place of my own is what gave me the motivation to just go wild.

I think I can match the 48hrs since I finished uni last week

Catching up on lots of games

Agreed!

Although if I manage to find a job that could all change. :p

7 hours a day?? i used to do that, especially in the CS 1.6 days, but now i'm bored within an hour maybe more if the game is new, and have to stop for the day.

so yeah, 7 hours a day playing what?! what about when they're bored of all their games, what do they spend 7 hours playing?
