I followed your instructions, but MIDI is not one of the available output types from Audicity. There is a SDS type listed, but this is a MIDI sample dump, not a MIDI file.

I found a program called Intelliscore that converts MP3 to a true multi-track MIDI file although it is not Open Source. It can be downloaded from http://www.intelliscore.net

Without trying it, I'd be very surprised if that program gives any ideal results. Waveform analysis is hard at the best of times. Dealing with multiple instruments across the whole frequency range would be a nightmare.

I'd be very impressed if it works well! Have you tried it?

I might have to download the demo later and try it out.

i know that i will still need to do work on the midi to get it right, i am just looking for something which saves me from having to compose the midi from scratch

in fact, Intelliscore comes with a midi editing program

that 15 second limit on the demo really sucks, tho
