PS3 Finally Includes HDMI Cable

Recommended Posts

No, you did not misread that subheadline: Sony's unveiled a new PlayStation 3 Slim bundle that finally includes an HDMI cable along with a copy of the Game of the Year edition of LittleBigPlanet.

Since the PlayStation 3 has been on sale, those who owned an HDTV had to spend extra to get an HDMI cable to get the optimal visual quality that PS3s offered. It's taken nearly four years for Sony to get around to tossing in a cable along with the unit, measured at six feet long to boot. LittleBigPlanet GOTY also makes a gracious offering of including 18 user-made levels, and seven DLC packs including the Metal Gear Solid content.

Amazon is currently taking pre-orders for the bundle right now. It'll run you $349.99 and will be released June 12.

I think it DOES matter. I find it dispicable that you buy a device which will pretty much be guaranteed to need the cable, and it not come with one.

I hope MS follows suit. Sucks that they HAD it with the Elite then DUMPED it.

At least Microsoft offered a HD cable out of the box (component) from day one.

They don't anymore though, do they? Isn't it composite only now?

I've checked out some Blu Ray players from Sony recently and they don't supply an HDMI cord with it, although, I do think they might start doing that.

when i bought my ps3 slim 3 years ago from Oman (mid-east) i got an HD cable for free. so i could get the max out of my ps3 and i payed a little bit extra i would have gotten an LCD but i already had that so yea

but my ps3 fat got YLOD about 3 weeks ago and i bought a brand new slim ps3 (250 model) and i expected to find an extra HD cable in there but didn't find any

it's about time they included it

(p.s. in Virgin mega store here in Egypt the ps3 fat with the LBP game of the year bundle was out about a year ago...now they have the fifa 2010 and the Tekken 6 ones)

Pretty cool stuff. If nothing else, it'll prevent that "oh crap" moment that a lot of people had (myself included) when they realized that the system had no means of providing HD out of the box.

Then again, I stopped worrying about cables the day I discovered monoprice.com.

The question is, what quality is the cable?

...

... I'm kidding. But you can bet your ass that places selling PS3's will try to sell expensive cables with them for some attachment bonus. I know I used to.

I used to do the same thing to, up to ?20 for a cable that could be bought elsewhere in the same town for less than a quarter of that... Shocking business practices sometimes, all for the sake of precious attachment rates.

Poor Best Buy, no more ripping off ignorant shoppers $50 for a 3' HDMI cable. I guess they'll just have to settle for the extended warranty and Geek Squad setup.

I payed 12 Euro for a separate HDMI cable back in October last year -.-

I don't really see a problem with not including a HDMI cable, they are only a couple of quid to pick up alongside your PS3.

No doubt the cable will only get bundled with this particular package, and newer ones will probably go without again.

There isn't anything wrong with it, but it would be "nice". The cost of an HDMI cable seems pretty inline with component and composite cables these days. A good quality HDMI cable can be purchased new at Amazon.com for $2.50 (6 foot). I don't want a Monster version for free, but a cheapo would be nice (though I already own good ones personally).

But, every dime counts when selling these consoles. They are still barely making money...so I can see why. I would do the same.
