Rappy Veteran Posted June 8, 2010 Veteran Share Posted June 8, 2010 Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short "Mortal Kombat" film (subtitled "Rebirth") that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise. The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year's Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall. Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word "Kombat" already a trending topic on Twitter. Antaris Veteran Posted June 8, 2010 Veteran Share Posted June 8, 2010 Ah Jeri Ryan, haven't seen her since ST:Voyager and one episode if Boston Legal. Sexy! Could be a good film, I still am a little fond of the original, not the sequel though. That blew. hard.
e-berlin.org
A possible photo-realistic MK game in near future?

Guest xiphi
I would definitely see this if it were a full movie. I think it's a viral video for the rebirth of the MK franchise since MK: Armageddon was to be the last of the MK's current story line.
Blindlabel013
I can see that this one won't have a great soundtrack like the previous films. It looks amazing otherwise though.

Rappy Veteran Posted June 8, 2010 Author Veteran Share Posted June 8, 2010 Update! Big Update: Apparently our friends at Latino Review got the big scoop on this video. It was shot by Fame director Kevin Tancharoen and is supposedly a "test video" that was made to convince Warner Brothers to give them funding for a full blown hard R Mortal Kombat movie. So it's not for a video game, but it's not part of a movie - yet, at least. Kind of like that first Tron Legacy test trailer, this was made to convince them that fans would like this gritty take (and they certainly do). "Yes, this is the direction they plan on going for the Mortal Kombat reboot," says Latino Review. Even I'm amazed by all of that news. Let's hope it's all true! SimplySchizo
That small clip was better than most recent full length movies. There's no way WB would turn this down.

TDT
No, ****ING NO! Turning MK into a realistic **** movie (if this is the video about) it's plain stupid. Keep it a fiction movie, with all the special FX of each character from the game. I don't want yet another chuck norris movie!

I don't want yet another chuck norris movie! the thing is, even the games themselves are becoming more 'chuck norris' in the way that they are using real martial arts moves and stuff... mortal kombat was always about the gritty gorey stuff, after all the first mortal kombat game was the reason for the existence of the video game ratings we have today... and by the looks of this trailer, its staying true to that... No, it's not. I see, from this video trailer, that they're trying to do a "real" movie on the MK theme. That's just wrong. I want to see Scorpion's hook and Sub Zero's ice blast, or Goro, or whatever, not a damn "underground" tournament. Next step, bring Van Damme into the picture, right? Wrong, plain wrong. They're ruining a fantastic franchise if they're going this way...

It'll be realistic in that it will use realistic devices and technology to do what is done in Mortal Kombat. I think it will be amazing.

I didn't see any hook, except for that "flash" (also Sub Zero's look). And even if you're right, it's, again, wrong. MK was about mystical stuff, realms, tournament on some island, etc. Not about devices and high-tech. I wouldn't be surprised if I see Reptile with an iPad... SimplySchizo
There's nothing 'real' about that video. Handcuffs magically falling off ones wrists. Some blind dude walking around and reading through files and pictures not to mention a top assassin. Hehe, not based on any true events so I'm sure it'll be as factitious and creative as possible. There was a hook, or some sort of grapple used. I'm sure certain characters powers will be well interpreted. Remember, the purpose of this video is to bring in funding for the project. You didn't expect to see special effects and huge displays of pyrotechnics did ya?

You're definitely look at it the wrong way. The MK franchise has been long overdue for a rebirth, and I believe if this was the direction they want to take I'm all for it. Don't get me wrong, I'll still play the original MK's on a weekly basis, and love the story as it is. It's just been beaten to death, and is in need of a resurrection. There's only so many times a character can come back from the dead before you get tired of it. That said, I'm highly curious to see what they've done to the franchise with MK9. We'll soon find out at E3 next week.

It's like you're doing the next Indiana Jones movie in the New York subway. It's WRONG. They could do a NEW MK story, following the last one they did, but keeping it on a fantasy level, with hq fx, blood, and so on. THAT'S MK, not "CSI vs. a bunch of killers". Are you kiddin' me, Scorpion as a "real life hired assasin"?!??!!? "Code name"?!?!? Come on....
