bigmoose
ive gone wireless over here with the linksys 2.4ghz wireless access point 802.11b i have the usb unit connected to this main pc and the pcmcia connected to the laptop and i have recently upgraded to a 3mb connection for the parents however, i installed du meter yesterday and have noticed this trend, it seems to be fine, and then drop down to 0/0 up and dowm for a bit, and then go back up to normal speed i have WEP working at 64bit but am not sure why the dropout would be happening every minute or so any ideas? thanks moose - i have a 1.7/1.8ghz phone nearby which was suggested as the problem, but even though its switched off, im still getting the errors. and there are a few mobile phones, gsms, but that woudnt affect it would it? MxxCon
how often do those dropout happen and for how long? do those dropouts happen on both desktop and laptop? try to temporary remove wifi from your setup to pinpoint where the problem is coming from. MxxCon
from what i undestand your setup looks like this internet->cable modem->linksys-> desktop and laptop? if so, try to temporary remove linksys and laptop from your setup and have just desktop directly to cable modem. Statikk
Try going into services and temporarily stopping the "wireless zero configuration" service. I'm willing to bet it's the culprit. ;) It's seems to do that with a few of the models of LinkSys USB adaptors I've setup.
bigmoose
wow, been up 2 minutes so far, nice! but does this mean i will have to teach my parents that if the connection kinda dies to input the key code? to log into the wep?
Statikk
I only have one computer hooked up with a crappy usb adaptor and the only time I can tell when it's doing that is when I'm doing things that are highly bandwidth intensive like playing mp3s or divx over the connection. Other than that normal web browsing and such work fine. I hardly use that system so I haven't had time to come up with a fix. A friend of mine was getting lag when he played counter-strike because of the same issue so I just made a link to the services console for him and showed him how to stop the service after his computer booted up. That's what I'm currently doing on my machine as well seeing as how it reboots once every two months or so. Did you install all of the software that came with your adaptor? If memory serves me correctly LinkSys included their own little utility that will automatically connect to the wireless network and send the key. All the things that the built in service does but without the instability. Check the LinkSys site for the newest updates to your adaptor. My advice would be to just get the PCI card though. When I was having this same problem a year ago it took me like 2 days before I was able to figure out what was going on. The whole reason I was setting the computer up there wirelessly was to stream music/movies to the home theatre, so the wireless connection not working properly was really upsetting me. Now that computer is being replaced by the xbox though. :D Hope I saved you a little time. Keep me posted if you find a better solution than just stopping the service! Edit: Check this one out
bigmoose
just rebooted the system and realised that i will have to find another solution, as my old fokes are not the most compter literate, and stoping and starting a service is no good for them, will look into this linksys utlitiy as well
