QoS Packet Scheduler

Recommended Posts

Can anyone explain what the QoS Packet Scheduler is? It is part of network properties and I do not know if I should disable it or not. Also, will my internet connection speed up or slow down if I decide to turn it off?

QoS is used to guarantee bandwidth. However, I think you need QoS-compatible apps and servers to actually make use of this feature. I personally haven't noticed any difference in my broadband connection with it installed/uninstalled/enabled/disabled/tweaked/untweaked.

Other people have mentioned a difference and even posted QoS tweaks showing how to get more bandwidth. You see the discussion here.

Feel free to mess around with it. If you don't notice any difference and you don't run any QoS apps, then go ahead and uninstall it. You can always reinstall it if something goes horribly wrong.

To disable QOS from naturally reserving 20% of available bandwidth you must edit the group policy for your machine. You actually have to Enable QOS and specify a reserve level of 0% to "disable" the feature.

Edit your group policy with gpedit.msc from the run box.
