PS3 on 24/7 for PlayTV?

Recommended Posts

I used to have a few satellite tuners for my PC and ive moved and dont have a satellite anymore, i dont really want to put up a new dish so i was toying with the idea of getting PlayTV instead of spending ?200 on a PVR.

I used to record a few hours of TV a day and my concerns are leaving my PS3 on 24/7 to get these recordings, does the fat PS3 have any issues with overheating if left on constantly, or can PlayTV wake the PS3 up from standby just before its about to record?

PlayTV (like PSP) will pop it out of standby mode when it accesses the PS3 for recording. There are thousands of people that leave their PS3s on 24x7, running folding (which really taxes the system), and I haven't heard of a single person having theirs over heat.

Its only ?30 on ebay, a dual tuner usb or pci tuner will cost about the same, might as well just use my PS3 i dont like having tuners in my PC.

Was referring to how much juice the PS3 "fat" sucks up. The slim has much lower power consumption.

Also, I think there is a new HD version of the PlayTV coming out, so if you are going that route, you might want to look into that.

As already mentioned the PS3 will 'wake' itself up when it needs to record and then go back to standby once finished. Also Cambridge Studios did recently confirm they are working on PlayTV2 which most imagine means a Freeview HD tuner. Sadly no mention of a release date though so I don't think you can go far wrong spending ?30 on the current iteration right now :)
