[E3 2010] Sony Press Conference

Recommended Posts

 I really like movies, and sometimes I just either had not rented a movie or did not send it back, and/or it was not on Netflix On Demand, so I would get it through Live. Honestly I barely use either now that I use my PS3 to stream with PS3 media Server, but the answer is I just definitely really like movies. I probably watch on average 4-5 a week. Actually a lot of the movies I rented through Live would be late night, my wife fell asleep on the couch, and it was movies I wanted to watch but she did not necessarily want to see. A whole lot of that actually.

Whatever you say. :D I finally got my friend started on Netflix so he would stop buying movies but unfortunately that isn't working so well. It's his money so I shouldn't cringe so much, but oh well. :p

First off you are right, you do have the right to comment on it, so I definitely do take back my comment about you not owning a PS3. With that said, you did not say it just once, I believe it was twice now, how you did not own one and they were not giving you any reason to own one, so yeah, I without a doubt consider that borderline trolling. If all you did was say this sucks and that sucks, I would have let it go and would not even have thought about it, as I had no clue if you owned one or not, but mentioning the fact you do not own one and saying whatever sucked, well that just does come off like trolling to me. It does. No mention of you do not own one, and I never think twice about it. I myself made fun of how horrible Move looked, I have no issue with people making fun of anything, I never have and never will, but when you accompany it with "give me a reason to own one," then yeah, that is borderline trolling IMO. But again, I do take back my comment about owning a PS3 as it was uncalled for, especially since it had nothing to do with my point.

And I do rent movies on Live, always have and never had an issue doing so. I also pay for Netflix and do not expect it to let me keep renting movies if I stop paying them. So that is why I completely disagree with you, as I do not see it as such a travesty I am only renting the content. I also do not see it as comparing apples to oranges, as content is content. Whether it is a movie, or a game, it is meant to entertain me. Would I prefer to keep it? Of course, who would not, but I do not see it being so awful, especially since I do view it as an add on service.

So you view it as a horrible way to give people content, I view it is a service that provides content, so let's just leave it at that.

BOT - I did not see Nintendo's conference, hoping I can see it now, but I did enjoy Sony's more than MS overall as they showed more games I am personally into. From an announcement perspective though, I can say easily that Nintendo has won just based on what i saw on Kotaku, and neither MS or Sony impressed me all that much with announcements.

Larry, here's the main reason I disagree with you...

With Netflix, you're renting movies. You're not renting additional content to movies you already own. For instance, let's say you own The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray. A service that would be comparable to this, IMO, is if they charged you to view additional content such as deleted scenes for The Dark Knight. Now, I realize that isn't an absolute comparison, but it's a better one than comparing PSN+ one-on-one with Netflix. With Netflix, you're renting movies. With OnLive, you're renting games. With PSN+, you're renting content for something you already own. That's precisely why I don't like it.

As far as the betas and stuff like that -- yes, those are great things to offer in something like PSN+. I've never had a problem with Xbox Live Gold having those for Gold members only (I go back-and-forth between Silver and Gold when I'm at college and when I'm home, for the most part). But renting content for a game you already own when that content should be additionally paid for is a bit extreme. It's entirely different than renting a game. If the PSN+ service were all about renting games -- hell, even PSN-only games -- I'd think it's a great service. Renting for content? Absolutely not.

I don't see a fault -- AT ALL -- with me saying something is crap. I do the exact same thing on PC games and Xbox 360 games, and I own both those platforms. Not owning a PS3 should not preclude me from being able to say something associated with the PS3 is crap, and that's an absolutely ridiculous claim to make in my book. If you'll notice in every single thread I've ever entered in the PS3 section, it has almost always been positive. When I posted about Killzone 2, it was because I loved the game and playing it with my roommate. In this thread, I specifically stated the things I liked and the things I thought were crap. I don't see any issue at all with that. This is a thread about the overall E3 conferences, which I have an interest in, because I'm a gamer. I always do that.

As for saying "I want a reason to own a PS3"... how in God's green earth is that trolling? I honestly want a reason! They just haven't differentiated themselves from Microsoft enough! Almost everything I can play on the PS3, I can play on the 360. I chose to by a 360 over exclusive preferences, such as Gears of War and Halo, for instance (this was before Killzone 2 was even announced, I believe, but I do love that game). If I owned a PS3, I promise you I would be saying the exact same thing, that "I want a reason to own a 360." Neither Microsoft or Sony has done much to differentiate themselves. I really want a reason to own a PS3. How on earth is it trolling to say that? I feel like Microsoft's done a slightly better job in differentiating themselves, though, as they started the XBLA craze which Sony then essentially copied, and the Kinect (IMO) looks much better than Move. But there are things Sony's done better, like free online play. I wish Microsoft did that for Silver users.

Now, Sony has done a few things which Microsoft has copied, too (the redesign of the 360 takes a lot of stuff out of Sony's playbook), no denying it. But I own a 360. Asking for Sony to do something groundbreaking with their console that will change the way things are done isn't much to ask. Microsoft has changed the dashboard completely, added services (like the recently-announced ESPN), and changed the way you can interact with your console with Kinect (which isn't an absolute game changer, but it certainly helps differentiate). I wish Sony would start doing something to separate themselves and give me a reason to own a PS3 and a 360, because right now, I don't see a reason to with Blu-Ray players now extremely affordable. I don't think that's out of line at all to say. And I shouldn't have had to expand upon my original statement and tell you all of this, because I never stated anything in a rude fashion to begin with.

Nintendo > Sony > Microsoft, in order of best to worst this year.

I'm disappointed that The Last Guardian wasn't shown in any capacity, and I would probably slap the guy who thought a Sly Cooper Collection would be better than say a Ico/SotC collection.

And I was really hoping for some sort of new UI or at least some fancy new firmware talk.

Also, Kevin Butler rules, it was utterly cheesy, but his speech was right, I feel sorry for those who can't see past silly allegiances to one side which in turn means missing out on a lot of great games, which is what Gaming should be about.

I do feel extremely sorry for those people clinging to an allegiance so as to not play games. On the other hand, there are people like me that can't justify spending money on two consoles at once so we have to sit by and watch others play the games which makes me want less exclusives and more multiplication. Unfortunately the industry is going in the exact opposite direction.

Best line of the presser - "I was Kevin Butler was introduced to me backstage as 'VP of sharpening things'" -- Gabe Newell.

Love to see that even SteamCloud support is coming as well.

I don't mind the exclusives, they tend to take better advantage of a console's strengths, and they seperate consoles. Sometimes it sucks, but in reality, we'll survive. I'm in the same boat you are.

Me too :(

Guys I had to leave and missed the majority of the show. Any info on the PSN+ plans in detail yet?

Yes, you can find all of the details here.

Still think that the lack of any form of PSP2 information really let this down for Sony. Steam and Portals 2 (we already knew Portals 2 was coming) just isn't enough, most of the games were mutliplatform and worst of all we saw really nothing new about Move other than its pricing. Natal seems to have some serious potential but unlike Sony they decided to only show casual market games (there will hopefully be some more core games coming out in the future that utilize it). Still, even if Move had a more focused and hardcore line-up it was still nothing really amazing or new. Overall this conference was pretty boring.

I can't judge Nintendo's conference, but they barely talked about anything at all. One handheld and a game or two doesn't really qualify as anything, even if it is new stuff. Microsoft had several exlusive unseen titles shown this E3 (Codename Kingdoms for example).

Overall, if I ranked them myself it would probably be a dead tie between all three. Each did something right, but most of it was mediocre or sub-par.

I don't see the point in rating press conferences. It's not like every year they can have content that will blow you out of the water or that you haven't heard before. Now adays with the internet nothing can be kept a secret for too long. Besides that, I already knew PSP2 wasn't going to be shown at E3. Quite frankly its too early, and they would rather display it in Japan where there is a real following.

Killzone 3

LittleBigPlatet 2

GT5

Twisted Metal

Final Fantasy XIV

Infamous 2

I think they showed more exclusives than 3rd party titles and those 3rd party titles with exclusive content.

I wanted to see The Last Guardian, Resistance 3, FFversusXIII. :( Not interested in Move but I really like that Sorcery game. If I can get the controllers cheaper I'll get the game. Not going to pay $80 for the Move and navigation controller. Not a big fan of those motion controller stuff. I prefer the traditional controller.

@Kol - the issue I had with the press conference is that it was boring. Most of the video was either multiplat or old. Information was already known save for two games (Twisted Metal and FF XIV) and honestly none of them really impressed me. Not to say I was impressed with much at E3 at all. But at least all the E3 footage of MS exclusives were new. Gears showed the first gameplay, Halo Reach announced new mechanics and campaign gameplay and Codename Kingdoms had yet to be heard of.

Which video was old exactly ?

Just cause you knew about the games doesn't have anything to do with them showing for the first time. Same crap was brought up early today. (you all spit the same venom) Was there a single game on the MS floor that anyone didn't know about prior to the conference? The freaking console itself was leaked before the conf. So what's your point? You found it boring, that's cool. MS was a snore for me as well. I'm not going to get into game nitpicking, cause I could go on forever.

Just cause some video were of multiplatform means what exactly? You know what I find worse than showing multiplatform game footage (regardless if you're announcing exclusive additional content to go along with it) ? It's when you have a developer on stage showing off a game for you and they make it a point to everyone to check out your competitors stage the following day for 'more'. That's embarrassing. Sony got alot of love from developers in their conference.

In the end, while MS was busy trying to steal Wii consumers from Nintendo, Sony was busy showing more exclusives 1st party and 3rd, more games overall, more content, less babble. Making all the right Moves. :p

Meh, i'm done with the whole conf discussion, you proMS guys are something else...

Ok so people bash XBL But sony can pull this **** off and people will back it up.

...Sony is also indicating that Plus subscribers will be able to send voice messages to other gamers to invite them to play, even if they've made the foolish decision to not subscribe to Plus. Naturally, though, they won't be able to reply in kind unless they too pony up the cash....

REALLY? Everything in PSN Plus is included in XBL FREE. Anyone who protects sony on this move is full of ****. I mean how can you back this crap up? I was expecting more server support / better PSN Servers so downloads dont take AGES to download. But nope, sony continues to fail to the needs of people, but introduce a AWESOME FEATURE that you need to pay for. Paying for messages.... really? oh excuse me, "voice messages".

Whats next? In-game music / cross game chat? lmao wow.

So happy i skipped it. KZ3/Twisted Metal(thank god finally)/LBP2 and GT5 was all i was looking forward to. I love how they skip MGS :). Sorry sony but MGS is on 360 and so far, its sounds and looks epic. *and infamous 2, thats been on my list since 1 lol.

Oh how you fail kevin butler.

Hold on, you are saying that Nintendo had the best keynote and Sony second?

Did we all watch the same thing? Microsoft blew them all away with games, hardware, services. I am not really taking sides anymore at all with this console fanboy crap, but I'm just saying.. to me personally Microsoft's presentation was absolutely the best and most diverse. They showed everything, Kinect, new Xbox, ESPN, tons of games both 3rd party and exclusives.

Sony's presentation was extremely short. First hour was playing videos, talking about failing PSP and showing more commercials with some addons attached to it, instead of showing some PSP that has 3G, Camera integrated, 3D or some stuff like that.. but they didn't..

Second part was showcasing some games.. Twisted Metal didn't impress me at all.. Little Big PLanet 2 seems to be growing into overly complex building tool that didn't work that great the first time as people just don't want to spent hours making stuff but want to play. Final Fantasy 14 Online.. meh..

I like and can't wait for their upcoming games no doubt (like Infamous 2, Killzone 3, GT5 etc) but their exclusives from EA were pretty silly too.. Giving me a Medal of Honor with old Medal of honor as an exclusive? What's the point of that and who needs that. I played that game years ago? Secure some DLCs, secure some exclusive content in regards to the actual game.. not bundling an ancient game "remastered" whatever that means.

I just felt that Sony's presentation was worst out of all 3 and much worse than last year.

Let's hope GT5 comes out this November as we really can't trust them on anything anymore with that game.

Rant rant rant. Big difference is you can still play for free on PSN, you cant on 360.

Big difference lmao? Way to support sony, when they introduce no better server support. You still have free multiplayer thats **** half the time. Any game, especially bigger launches are hell to play. Recent one, BC2, sony had a 40k limit, and it took servers down for the good 3-5 days of release. XBL had over 200k players playing.

Oh wait, but your gonna tell me its "free, what do you expect".

Yeah and for $50 a year I didnt expect SENDING MESSAGES as a big deal...

And "you people" say proMS guys are something else, look at yourself before "you" guys talk.

*The "you" isnt only towards you Richard, theres a few, especially in the last 3 pages who said MS guys are amazing when they back up MS for everything, and yet you guys back up sony for such ****ty stuff like this. wow..

...snip...

Finally some damn reasoning. I wont say microsoft did the best job, but opening with GOW3, Reach and MGS RISING!? was awesome. Kinect worked out very well and i cant test it out real world performance, but its better then the wii exact rip off crap like move.

Atleast microsoft introduced something NEW to the playing field. I liked the demo of the exercise / boxing game and driving. When she was driving it follow every movement, how much acceleration and everything.

Also, ESPN for free was a big "WTF" because half of us XBOX users expected a raise in XBL Price. Oh microsoft how you surprise us again.

Oh btw, the new consoles are $50 cheaper then sony still lol.

Nintendo was MEH because they had nothing to show. 3DS wasnt all that impressive, but the no glasses part "sold" me on it. Bringing some classic games was a good hit. one of the best e3 shows they have had in the past years.

Sony, em my comment above stands. I dont know what to think about sony anymore. To the GT5 comment you made BOZ, if they happen to break the Street Date they set, i dont know how anyone can/should rely on them anymore. When you set a street date you dont break it, hopefully they come through and dont have a "last minute hiccup" that makes them move it back, like the last 3 damn years. Ruined GoW3 because of this(8 hours, come on) but hopefully GT5 follows the trailer because im sold on release day.

Ill never get tired of your smart ass comments towards us xbox people seeing how your totally gonna defend sony on there ****ty choice for "PSN+". Plus what? Plus nothing obviously.

Explain what you really get that justifies $50? Ill explain what comes with XBL that justifies the $50 price tag to me.

If you cant/wont. Dont bother replying then.

I also think your on Kevin harder then anyone. Good job (Y).

Calm down Tito! ...you're taking this way too serious. "us xbox people"? Seriously man, I don't know you, but I would suggest fresh air. Re-evaluate some things.

No, I won't bother replaying to your statements. I don't want to be the cause of your stroke. It's really not worth it. Have a good evening.
