Cross-Game Chat Comes (And Needs PSN +)

Finally! Cross-game chat is coming to the PlayStation Network! After what seems like years of demand, Sony has announced cross-game chat, which allows PSN members to talk to each other, even while playing different games. However, the oft-demanded feature does come with one large caveat: chats can only be initiated by PlayStation Plus members.

PlayStation Plus members will be able to send invites to any member of the PlayStation Network, free or paid. Up to four PSN members can be in a party chat, however at least one participant must be a member of PSN+. The chat will discontinue if all paying members disconnect.

While some may be disappointed that such a hotly demanded feature is closed behind a pay wall, the service is still technically available to free members. So long as you're popular and have friends that pay for PlayStation Plus, you should be able cross-game chat and keep your free ride, too.

[opinion]PSN + has only been announced for roughly 5 hours and already Sony is gimping their free network. I'm sure from now on, big updates will begin to require PSN + more and more.[/opinion]

Yea. I think this comes as to no surprise to anyone. I'm not quite sold on PS+ yet.

I am glad and thankful they're keeping everything as is now, for free.

How are they gimping their free network when it didn't exist on there already?

PSN+ is extended features on top of the free version, and this just happens to be one of the features.

Yeah honestly, as messed up as this is, and it is messed up, I made a comment to my friend that told me, and that is I really cannot see any scenario where I would need cross game chat anyway. Meaning my PS3 has never been what I consider a social console, and that is okay by me. The only time I need to talk to people are those rare times I have been playing the same game with my friends, which is indeed rare.

Also not for nothing, but people sound like ass on the ps3 more often than not. The one thing Sony absolutely messed up on, and there are a few, but they absolutely dropped the ball by not coming up with an official headset like MS did. Allowing people to use whatever bluetooth headsets they want was nice for freedom and price, but absolutely the wrong decision for usability and standards.

With that said, this announcement is indeed messed up for sure. Just do not see it directly affecting me.

Why is that? It remains FREE.

Because I never enjoyed the free multiplayer/community experience that PSN had to offer on my PS3. Now they're including things to make it better, but you have to pay for their "Plus" service. I just wish they had done a better "Plus" service from the start and stopped pretending that because PSN was free, it was better than XBL.

It is free. One does not have to pay subscription-based fees in order to play online games, download demos, theme etc. on the Playstation. They are just adding features that did not exsist to a fee-based subscription plan while leaving everything that was previously free as it was.

The same cannot be said about the Xbox. One has to pay if one wants more than a months trail.

And that's exactly what they will say when the add more and more features, which is the whole point. Before, they claimed that their service offered the same game play services as Xbox Live, but for free. Now, they are adding services that Xbox Live had and are now charging for it with a new tier of PSN.

This is the first of many more features that are "extensions" of PSN.

How is Sony gimping their their free network? EVERYTHING that was in the free network remains FREE. No features were taken away and made PSN+ exclusive.

Unfounded speculation based on nothing but <snipped>

You can download demos, themes, etc on Xbox Live Silver. You can still even purchase all of the content they have.

Yes, MindTrickz, I am a fanboy because of my signature and my ONE thread posted in the Sony Forums. It's not unfounded speculation. It's based on the fact that they are now moving features that have been talked about for YEARS, to PSN+ less than 6 hours after announcing the service.

What are you talking about? Of course they are going to add even more features. Regular PSN is not changing, they aren't adding or removing features. And since when did they "claim" their free service offered the same services as Live?

Seriously man?

Um, Silver XBL members often have to wait at least a week to gain access to content Gold members get instantly.

Have you ever read a single interview from Playstation execs? I'll try and find one and quote it, but multiple times they have paraded that they have most or all the core features of Xbox Live and for free. Regular PSN isn't changing...yet.

The same thing is going to happen. Maybe not now, but within a few months, similar actions will take place. It's inevitable.

That's fine. Please find an article where it states anything remotely like this, one where you didn't take anything out of context.

Seriously man, are you posting all this doingthisforthelolz? lol I had to ask. Do you even own a PS3?

I'll find one. And I most definitely do own a PS3. It sits right next to my Xbox 360 and Wii. Don't use my gamertag to make some condescending joke. I'm allowed to post my opinions, as are all of you, in whatever forum I would like, whenever I would like.

You guys must be living in some sort of happy land. Business is business. If you think Sony cares more for their audience than Microsoft, or if a business actually cares about anything than making profits, you're not thinking properly. They will change their business model to make money. It's economics 101.

I will direct you to my post on this years E3 if you find me biased because of one thread that you guys don't seem to like. http://www.neowin.ne...t&pid=592762700

Sony already makes more money from PSN than Microsoft does Xbox Live...and that's with the $50/year subscription.

Gonna call BS on that one. Find me real statistics on that because I'm pretty sure you're lying at this point.

Also, find me a Transparent PNG of the PSN logo so I can add it to my signature.

First one is a little choppy but should look good when sized down to fit your signature.

And not that it matters, but I know you own a PS3 as I am pretty damn sure you are on my friends list no?

Weeks after the GOLD has it.

No, what makes you appear as one is the fact that you are trying to somehow trying to put a negative spin on this and by making things up as you go.

Sony NEVER said that they would bring cross gaming chat to the the PSN, and they therefor can not be "gimping" it by making it an PSN+ exclusive. IF you claim other-wise then please back up your claim with proof and source. I suspect that you will have any.

The same thing is going to happen. Maybe not now, but within a few months, similar actions will take place. It's inevitable.

More unfounded speculation based on absolutely NOTHING:

I'm not going to get into this with you, but clearly you are the one who is biased. I gave examples of why I believe this is going to be a theme in the next few months, however you chose to say I am "making things up".

It's my opinion. You're getting bent out of shape for no reason. Also, I like how you edited your post, because I did report you for calling me a fanboy, which to quote you is "unfounded speculation based on absolutely NOTHING". This is your opinion, not fact.

Learn the difference.

Taken from our own favorite website. I will say that most information was based on insider rumors, but one wonders if they intentionally moved it to PSN +. This was a feature talked about for years (yes years, do a google search). How about this.

Cross-Game Chat COULD and SHOULD have been on PSN, but Sony has now decided to put it on PSN+.

Oh I most definitely agree they intentionally saved it for Plus subscribers. But it's not really removing anything from PSN since it was never there... and prolly never planned on it being there either (this is my speculation :p). As you say that's a great rumor article, but rumors don't always come true. That Naughty Dogs post was deleted almost a full 24 hours later with plenty of comments quoting him, so I'd bet he wasn't worried about it "slipping out" at first... it was probably removed because it was falsely said.

Anyways I think I read in one of the posts that even if you don't have Plus you can still use it as long as you are friends with someone that already does are you're grouped with them. My friends will be happy lol XD

Edit: It was 15 hours :p
