Linksys Wireless-G Network Extremely Slow

Recommended Posts

We just got a wireless router and everything works...with one exception, it's VERY SLOW. Right now I only have ony computer on the network and it's upstairs, the signal strength is always Very Good and the speed is 48mbps - 54mbps. I started downloading firebird and got around 2-3 KB/s. I have updated the firmware to the most recent but it didn't fix my problem. I also tried disabling WEP, but no luck, anyone had this problem before?

Might be a stupid question - but you do have highspeed inet access? If not - thats not too bad for dialup speed ;)

Ok - so you have high speed, maybe the site your downloading from is slow. Does a machine that is wired to your highspeed connection get faster downloads from the same site? What kind of file transfer speed are you getting from machine to machine on your network?

Heh, yeah, we have high speed internet and i'm getting 220 KB/s on another computer connected to the router (wired). Machine to machine file transfers are very good, MUCH faster than internet downloads.

I did a little benchmarking, and I get around 495 KB/s for network transfers. I don't understand why the speed is so bad when the signal is so good!

Yes, running most up to date firmware and drivers.

Hum, that doesn't sound right, does your neighbor or somebody near you have a B network going?

What is the link quality? You can have a strong signal but have it corrupt also :(

With my b airport network, I get about those same speeds with encryption enabled :p

I am not sure, it is different between all wireless drivers, and I am used to the OS X options now :(

Other things like microwaves and stuff can also cause interference, so it could be something else in your house

Try changing the channel and see if that helps, I usually use channel 9 because nobody seems to use it :p

Ok, you were right, our neighbors do have a B network running...my router is set to "G-Only" though, is there any other way to filter them out?

Use a different channel then them, at least 3 numbers ahead or behind these :p

Or you can return your router and just leech of there network now :p

What Version of the G-Router Firmware?

What Hardware are you using Besides the Linksys Router? Who makes the PCI or Laptop cards that you're using, what are there firmwares and driver versions?

It's all brand new Linksys Wireless-G equipment (Running in G-Only mode, WEP 64 bit enabled), i'm only using the Wireless-G Router/Base Station as well as a Wireless-G PCI card.

Base Station Firmware: 1.30.1

Driver Versions: 3.10.39.7

I have that router too. I dont have any problem. Works fine when I am upstarirs or downstairs. Maybe because i have both G devices. Works fine for me.

Gives me around 700kb for in network transfer or faster.

I also have all G devices, but why are we getting such crappy network transfer speeds? This is supposed to be a 54mbps network and we're barely getting 6mbps.

you will never get 54MB, you will never get 24MB, you'll get about 8-10Mb.

when you say "Network Transfer" do you mean a File from 1 PC to Another, or a File Transfer from your Cable/DSL Connection to you PC?

OK Your PCI Card is an Outdated Driver,

Here's is what I belive is the problem

A. Your Router is running the FINAL DRAFT 802.11g while your PCI Card Isn't. that driver version on the PCI Card is not FINAL SPEC you should update it when the driver is released.

2. You're Not Using WPA instead of WEP, by upgrading both the Driver or your PCI Card and the Firmware or your Wireless G Router, and installing the Windows XP WPA Update from Windows Update, you can switch over to use WPA which is 1. More Security, 2. Better Throughput.
