Portal (2) just got alot harder...

Why do they have to make things like this First Person? I don't get it. the environments would look much better if you could scale in it against a character from the outside, like 3rd person.

damn I hate FPS

The portal effect wouldn't be the same in third person.

Also, GlaDOS constantly talks to 'you', the player. It wouldn't have the same effect if it was talking to the in-game character in third person view.

It's hardly a typical FPS. It's a puzzle game more than anything, just from the first person format. A bit like Mirrors Edge, only good.

After playing Portal in first-person, I cannot see it done any other way. Plus the whole concept of going through portals would be absolutely destroyed in third-person. A game like Mirror's Edge may have benefited from third-person, but not Portal IMO.

It is part of the experience. The whole thing wouldn't work if it was 3rd person.

Ouch, burrrrnnnn.

Wow wow wow wow .... The first one was the best game I ever played in my entire life ( excluding Tetris of course :) ) but now, Portal 2 managed to raise the bar even higher. I am really impressed.

Looks amazing, I really wondered how they could take the game forward and didn't think it'd change much, but they've done a great job (Y)

Btw, it's a lot, not alot :p

I'm all for them making it harder (the first one was a breeze, for the most part), I just hope they don't make it too hard and displease casual gamers who may have liked the first one... cause I want this to sell millions of copies so Valve can make more of them ;)

+1

A bit harder would be ok but you have to make sure the game is enjoyable.

I think I will wait for the second one, one thing I do not like is buying old games.

You have to play the first game as it lays down basic portal concepts. If not, you'll be pretty lost in the second one.

The portal effect wouldn't be the same in third person.

It isnt a FPS. It is a FPP (First-Person Puzzler)

Part 3: :o

That's probably the first time I've seen fluid dynamics used this well in a game. Stunning. :|

It's metaballs most likely, proper fluid dynamics is way to hard to calculate in real time (current high end graphics cards are capable of simulating about a cup's worth of liquid in real time)

I really did think that they would struggle to make a successful sequel to the epicness that was Portal. But I have never been so glad to see I got it wrong. It looks fantastic.

It said at the end - "coming soon on playstation". Or maybe thats just because they presented it there maybe...

Its coming to PS3, 360 and PC. :)

And Mac.

They said the PS3 version was the best console release because they can offer Steam, which allows them to update it whenever they want (unlike on the 360 where they have to go through MS) Hopefully it puts enough pressure on MS to change it, since TF2 on the 360 is in a terrible state.

Edit: Damn Germans. It might be on Linux as well by then if they launch it in time.

Dude, Portal was free for like 2 weeks (or something) a couple of weeks ago. Should have snapped it up then! I did (Y)

I know I did, still haven't played it yet, not feeling well or motivated lately. :(

Unfortunately, I don't see TF2 on the 360 (in the Orange Box) ever getting updated at this point.

They said there would be some form of cross-compatibility between PC and PS3:

Valve has revealed that is planning to allow cross-compatibility between PS3 players and PC/Mac players in Portal 2.

When questioned on the subject of cross-compatibility between Steamworks and Steam, specifically playing co-op on a computer while someone else plays on a PS3, Valve?s Eric Johnson said it was ?something the team is gunning for.?

Valve developer Mike Dunkle also confirmed this news, saying:

?The plan is you will be able to play between console and PC.?

Johnson also confirmed that Steamworks appearing on 360 will only happen if Microsoft?s make the decision to allow this.

Portal 2 was announced earlier this week for PS3 by Valve boss Gabe Newell in what is almost certainly megaton of the show. It launches day and date with the 360 and PC versions next year

.

Not sure what that means but i'll still be getting it for the PC.

"Johnson also confirmed that Steamworks appearing on 360 will only happen if Microsoft?s make the decision to allow this."

We all know how MS are so that won't happen (they only allow so many updates a year - Valve will break that in a month!). But if we're getting cross platform gaming I guess the PS3 will be seeing the same amount of updates as the PC? Maybe future games will have cross platform gaming like TF2? Kicking the arse of console gamers?

Oh yes. :p
