techbeck
There are scattered reports of problems with Apple's Snow Leopard update that was released yesterday. Ah, tradition.Over on the Apple Discussions forum, early updaters are reporting a series of troubles after upgrading to Mac OS X version 10.6.4: * Complete installation failure. * iTunes running on an iMac caused the UI to become unresponsive. * A MacBook Pro lost internet access. * Quicken Essentials for Mac 2010 is hanging, both when trying to download transactions and when assigning categories. * Folders have disappeared from an iMac's desktop and the user can't shut down ? which appears, from this end, to possibly be a hang during startup. * Inability to use function keys to control display brightness. * Fonts, to quote the poster, getting "f***ed up" in Firefox and font-installation problems using FontExplorer. * Display problems with Photoshop CS 5 Extended and a Mac Pro freezing up. * More font problems in a post entitled "10.6.4 Totally Destroys Your Fonts". There's also one thread that details a number of problems, including system crashes, systemUIserver crashing when Spotlight is invoked, problems with iTunes and Microsoft Office, and slushy performance. If you've ever worked on a Help Desk, you know how devilishly difficult it is to diagnose many of such problems without access to the affected machine ? the problems may be due to 10.6.4, unsophisticated users, wonky extensions and third-party apps, a combination of all three, or frickin' gamma rays, for all we know. But if you're experiencing any of the aforementioned foul-ups, keep an eye on the relevant thread. Some well-informed poster might come up with the magic bullet. ? http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06/16/mac_os_x_10_6_4_update_problems/
.Neo
A MacBook Pro lost its connection with the internet, iTunes running on an iMac caused the UI to become unresponsive, folders have disappeared from an iMac's desktop. Sound like isolated incidents to me with no way of telling if these problems are actually caused by the 10.6.4 update or user's error... #Michael
Well mine downloaded in about 5 minutes and installed without any issues. Nothing like the register once again making a big too do about mostly nothing. I can't tell you how many times I have had issues with XP/Vista/7 (yes 7) with failed updates that **** up the system. I spend hours upon hours fix peoples systems because of failed updates. I have yet to have a failed update for os x.

They are taking all of this from Apple discussion threads on Apple's site. Its the Apple/Mac users that are making a big deal about this. In other cases a simple application update will fix compatibility issues, if and when they exist.

Normally wait and see if there are any problems first.
Brian M. Veteran Posted June 16, 2010 Veteran Share Posted June 16, 2010 Installed on my iMac and MacBook Pro without problems. Oddly, though, 10.6.4 hasn't appeared in Software Update on my xServe (2009, running 10.6.3)

So far I always upgraded straight away, with no issues whatsoever. I used to be active on a Dutch forum where always the same people ended up with problems for some reason... Possibly...but I never heard of an Apple update like this causing so many problems...even if they are user errors. Are you kiddin' me?! Seriously, pay more attention next time. 10.6.4 really is no exception when it comes to this... ;)

Installed with no issues and no hiccups. I wish people would actually take the time to...you know...actually work out the issue before bitching and complaining on forums for no reason. PNWDweller
The font issue might be the only one I had, but I didn't really pay too much attention to it other than an annoyance. Working in iWeb '09, if I change the text color of a hyperlinked item by highlighting and then changing color it didn't do it, but I figured it might have been a bug in iWeb so I didn't figure too much into it. rawr_boy81
I've had 100% stability for both my iMac (20inch, 2.66Ghz, Radeon HD 2600 Pro) and MacBook Pro (late 2009). Every time I hear people having problems with their computer, 9/10 it has to do with the person being a grade (A) idiot - and that goes for Windows and Mac OS X. The computer experience is only as good as the user who maintains the computer. Did you take a sour pill? Some comments are to be taken with a grain of salt... Hence the wink... I'd take anything said on the internet with a grain of salt; it reminds me of 5 pages of whining, whinging and complaining about Safari crashes after upgrading to Safari 5 until some idiot admitted, "oh, I have extensions installed" (which use private API's that are constantly being changed, never designed to be used outside of Apple) then once they uninstalled them they have stability. I read through threads on macrumors and appleinsider, the stupidity is so bad I have to go away for a long walk because it is that frustrating. There no such thing as "fail" next to ANY apple product, in their opinion. And if they have issues, they either keep them "quiet" and search the internet for a solution from a "not-so-fanatic" apple user that had the same issue, or they blame it on voodoo magic. But hardware or software?? Noooo!
The_Decryptor Veteran Posted June 17, 2010 Veteran Share Posted June 17, 2010 I haven't had any font issues for a bit, but the font cache can get corrupted quite easily (a combination of bad fonts and stupid "fixes" in the API) Funnily enough, I just noticed my keyboard's brightness keys no longer work, but that doesn't really matter to me since I have a desktop, so I don't need to conserve battery power (And "dimming" a display where you can't properly control the brightness means you're just hiding the back light, wasting the power used to light the screen)

But hardware or software?? Noooo! I love my Mac to pieces but I am not as so ignorant to put all the blame on the shoulders of Apple or Microsoft; at the end of the day both of them operate and test their software based on how the majority of people use it and thus the majority of user don't suffer from the problems appearing in the original article. I for one have no system tweakers, modifiers, enhancers, boosters, and Safari Extensions - thus I have had perfect bliss and reliability. My parents are the same situation, a vanilla installation, install updates as they come out and everything works wonderfully. Now if you're wondering why I have a Mac, it is because I like how the Mac operates as so far as the GUI look 'n feel and layout, the built in UNIX'ish of it. Apple delivers me what I want - it makes Mac OS X the better choice for me. I'm sure when it comes to Windows for other users there will be things that are of great importance - my brother is an engineer and needs Windows because all of his engineering software is written for Windows and testing equipment only works with Windows. For him Windows is the better choice for his needs :D Is this a free upgrade? Of course it is, why wouldn't it be or are you 'troll'in troll'in troll'in'? MacRumors is particularly bad. That's why I came to Neowin - visiting MacRumors drove me insane. Thank god, I thought I was the only one. Neowin truly does rock, it has a much lower idiot ratio - when there are discussions they actually evolve into something insightful instead of a cage full of fanboys and trolls throwing dung at each other.
