.Neo
Tell that to the apple fanboys and you're screwed. There no such thing as "fail" next to ANY apple product, in their opinion. And if they have issues, they either keep them "quiet" and search the internet for a solution from a "not-so-fanatic" apple user that had the same issue, or they blame it on voodoo magic. But hardware or software?? Noooo! Same can be said of Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Google, Linux etc. fanboys so why single out the Apple devision of the fanboy club? Come on, when have Apple *EVER* charged for an update? 10.6.1 = Free 10.6.2 = Free 10.6.3 = Free and low and behold 10.6.4 = Free Again, when have they ever charged for an update? In fact with iOS 4.0 they are giving it away for free for all people.

Are you kidding?! Are you seriously comparing the apple-ism religion to anything else?! Apple fanboys have a big thing in common, that makes their fanaticism so big: they get everything apple throws at them without question. No matter if they buy some crap ipad that they'll never use, or some macbook that they don't even need because they have 2 more laptops. Yes, there might be MS fanboys too, Linux advocates, etc., but none of them compares to the apple "community".

Said Apple fanboys are a minority and more common on sites like Mac Rumors, not so much here on Neowin. As a matter of fact there are Mac users who are driven away from sites like Mac Rumors and come here instead - because they want to escape the Mac cultists. People like that exist in every segment of the consumer market. Edit : Oh hang on . . . Rudy
The only problem in that list I have seen is: * Fonts, to quote the poster, getting "f***ed up" in Firefox and font-installation problems using FontExplorer. For some reasons sometimes my firefox will display squares instead of text.... but the problem started when I was still running 10.6.3 so this update is not the cause

Haven't you checked out the Mac OS X Snow Leopard "What's New" page? Fanboy.app is the latest addition introduced with this update. ;)
Xtreme $niper
I'm pretty sure (and MacFixIt has mentioned this numerous times in the past) that a lot of users install kernel extensions, or other dangerously low-level modifications on their systems, not knowing that it may cause problems in the future. So when it comes time to do an update, BAM. Apple changes system files that they assume have not been touched (because they shouldn't have been touched) and the system freaks out, and then the users blame the update. I'm not saying this is the only way for an update to fail, but I find it is by far the most common reason why these OS upgrades fail in the first place. Just don't install stupid extensions, and before applying the update, do a file permissions repair, reboot the computer and hold down SHIFT while logging in to disable login startup items, and do the install without launching any other program first. Also, it would be better to use a combo updater from the website instead of running it through system update, which only downloads what it thinks you need. That's how I apply all my updates. protocol7
No problems here that I can see on my '06 MacBook. I always use the combo updater though, not the Software Update and run a permissions repair beforehand.
.Neo
The article is fake because you had no problems on your single computer. Right. The other way around you can't say "Mac OS X 10.6.4 update problems surface" either as all of these issues so far are incidental. Nor is it clear if they've been caused by the update in the first place, or due to user error or something else.

I was just posted this so people can see the issues users are experiencing and maybe hold off on upgrading. Thats all. If its user error, then there are a lot more stupid people using computers than I thought. We shall see tho and I will not be updating any work Macs for a few more months until some of the bugs are worked out. I dont upgrade MS SPs either until they have been out for a little while. Any bugs that the 10.6.4 update caused won't be fixed until 10.6.5, unless it's something extremely bad or caused by a third-party incompatibility (in which case the third-party should offer a bug fix). Will you hold off upgrading to 10.6.5 as well when it arrives to wait if its bugs will be sorted in 10.6.6, etc. etc.? If you've done nothing weird with the Macs you administer (like using unsupported input managers) chances are pretty slim a 10.x.x update will cause serious harm. You could always update one or two Macs as a testing platform and see how they perform for a few days. To be safe you could always make an image of the startup disk of the test Macs in question with Disk Utility and restore it if things go south. That said, I still think for obvious reasons that at this point the thread title is misleading and gives readers the wrong impression.
