[E3] Rage gameplay

Recommended Posts

While it doses look great, the whole "megatexture" look seems a little off to me. Like, it's hard to fool my eyes that all of the surfaces are flat.

thats not the point of megatexture... its meant to allow the entire terrain to be hand-painted by the artists rather than having to repeat a texture over and over again....

like, the entire terrain will have a unique all the way across, but the textures are still flat on the surface

::edit:: one thing i was quite surprised about was when they mentioned that they 'jumped consoles' so that they 'didnt have to deal with any load screens at all' ....

i thought the game wasnt supposed to even have load screens??

It's not even called megatexture anymore, they changed it to Virtual Texturing in id tech 5. There is a PDF from SIG Graph presentation 2009 by Waveren, an id senior programmer which explains it a bit but its fairly technical. (found it on wikipedia)

Also, wonder how Doom 4 will look like. It's supposed to have a lot more details and run at 30fps instead (although that was said some time ago).

Heh, was about to post that.

I have to admit, I wasn't so hot on Rage since the last stuff we saw. But hot damn the game looks amazing now. Dunno what they did, or if it was just so early last time around, but holy crap. The animations alone are the best I've ever seen, period.

One thing i dont like is it's similarity to borderlands :(

But ia m sure it has completely different gameplay though.

While it may seem similar id Software inspiration for Rage came from Mad Maxx and others from the 80s and the idea the game was in development far longer and way before borderlands.

arent all the post apocalyptic games based on Mad Maxx tho? even Fallout 3's dog companion is taken from that movie, i think
