80% of the car models in Gran Turismo 5 are not "Premium" models

Recommended Posts

Gran Turismo 5 will feature over 1000 cars, the most ever in the series. It’s a collection of the hottest and most desirable cars from around the world, both past and present.

There are two tiers of cars in Gran Turismo 5--Premium cars and Standard cars. The differences between the two are as follows:

From the seductive curves of exotic sports cars, to the inviting sight of the road ahead when you slide into the driver’s seat and peer past the glass, down to the intricately detailed instrument panel and dashboard... Every one of the over 200 premium cars recreate every last detail of the car, inside and out.

Gran Turismo 5 contains over 200 of these "Premium" level cars.

The massive lineup of cars from past Gran Turismo games has been beautifully recreated through the latest technology and the Playstation 3’s cutting-edge graphics.

Gran Turismo 5 feature an astounding 800+ cars, a vast collection covering a wide range of eras and categories.

Seriously Sony. Was it worth putting in 1k cars if most look this bad? Should have finished up the game sooner and left out the fugly cars!

What the hell have they been doing all this time then, i thought all the delays where so they could add more cars, not use upscaled cars from GT4.

*edit* Just watched the video, they look better in motion, but still........

Wasn't it because Sony wanted 3D and Move support.

And if you actually watch the whole video it doesn't really look bad at all. Especially the final little tidbit with two cars racing near the farmland.

It still begs the question what the f have they been doing this whole time for turn10 to push 2 fully blown car games out in the same time?

Wow geez! That does look bad and VERY surprising news that they have recycled old car models :(

1000 cars? My god :o

You also need to remember that most of them are varieties of the same cars. other racers would just use upgrades and body mods to achieve the same or even higher number of just as unique cars, but..

2 questions:

1. What's so bad looking about the cars?

2. Have you EVER played GT in your life?

Since part I and II it's like that - you start with a small family Daihatsu or something and that's the coolest thing about GT except for the physics. If you don't like having choice and like the trendy things, go for NFS.

That has been known for quite a while though, that only 200 would be premium cars and the rest would be either older models or "upscaled" older models.

I dont think you get what he meant. This game using "standard" model cars is like PS2 GT4 using models and textures from GT1 on PS1. Id rather have fewer great looking cars with cockpits than 800 low poly models and only a handful of "premium" cars.

My guess is, content wise the game was already finished 2 years ago, maybe minus the NASCAR stuff. But then they realized: "Oh damn, our graphics engine ingame looks not as good as we would like, lets just spice it up the next two years!"

Developer: "But but to remake all car designs for ingame racing would take forever!"

Project Manager: " Whatever, aslong as the rest looks good, just upscale the PS2 cars!"

What are you raging about? I'd rather have fewer cars and a larger choice of tracks than have a bunch of cars upscaled.

Why the hell are you all complaining? Do you realize how long it would have taken to make 1000 high res cars for GT5? The game would never come out! It probably takes them a good two weeks+ to make one modeled car - times that by 1000 and you get your answer of when the game would come out if you were to make 1000 high res cars!

so just a couple of guys were working on the game???

two weeks+ per person per highres car details? maybe the company is bigger than that

With the standard cars, you will see scratching, dirt etc. only thing missing will my actual body deformation and sadly, the interior view. Pretty sad, but those 1000 cars are probably the ones you won't be driving as much as say the Lamborghini's and Ferrari's imho.

PD has about 180 employees, half of the Turn 10 team, which also get there modeling done by a third company.

The only reason I would think this is a problem is because up to know all the GT5 fans have been very vocal about the reason the game is taking so long. The big talking points for this game were "look how awesome the cars look and there's going to be a gajillion cars available in the game" and of course "GT5 will be the best looking racing sim bar none."Now it appears that, really, what were they doing? And it will look great, but with 200 cars.

I think 200 high-res cars is awesome. If the game had just that it would still be awesome.

Heck on PC we're still stuck with GRID and its, what, 50 cars?

Or you could play Forza 3 that, Like Titoist mentioned, has over 400 "premium" cars.

Comparing to other car games I own like Forza and Dirt I do not think GT is going ot be that good even though I have wanted it for ages, reading this is making me feel like this game is going to fail.
