Should I buy a PS3 Slim?

Recommended Posts

Well my 60GB PS3 bit the bullet (lasted 3 years) and I'm wondering if I should get a PS3 slim (if I can find one). I bought a broken 40GB off ebay not too long ago to keep OtherOS and swapped out the 60GB blu-ray drive so at the moment I have a fully functional PS3 - although I can't go on PSN. Wondering if the slims will last a long time as it's pretty apparent to me that all phat PS3's will die eventually do to the overheat + blu-ray drive issues. Only thing is at the moment I'm unemployed and just bought a digital camera which is another expense I probably shouldn't have had to deal with.

Other question is I have an old backup (not sure how long ago) of my 60GB PS3 and need to know how much data I should expect to get back (I know copy protected content doesn't get backed up - bye bye rock band data AGAIN).

I agree with Munky, I'd wait a bit until you can afford it. Try to sell your old PS3 -- not misleading anyone and say it's working, but sell it as broken. GameStop takes back broken consoles and will pay you something, just not all that much since they have to repair it. I'm not sure if that gives you cash or store credit, though.

Since you say you currently have a fully functional PS3 minus the PSN, that should be enough to hold you over until you can get more financially stable.

Well, I'm living with my parents atm and can afford a PS3 so its not really THAT much of an issue. Just seems like money is starting to go down the drain since I graduated....need to go golfing for fathers day tomorrow too so there's another $100 (although I got $100 back from government recently).

One last thing I'd like to know. Does anyone think Sony will have another price drop soon?

Here's a brief history:

- July 2007 - PS3 drops to $499

- September 2008 - PS3 40GB upgraded to 80GB $399

- August 2009 - PS3 160GB for $399, 80GB for $299

- September 2009 - PS3 120GB Slim $299

- November 2009 - PS3 Slim 250GB $349

New PS3 move bundle September 19, 2010?

I have a feeling Sony is going todo a price drop soon..

Heres the Local Prices for the 360 Slim / PS3 Slim in NZ

360 Slim : $499 - 250Gig Wi-fi etc.

PS3 Slim :$688 - 250Gig Wi-fi etc.

Most people are going to go buy a 360 being at a cheaper price.

What do you guys think?

OP: i think keep the 40gig till you know you can afford

A New slim .. and possabily a Price Drop...

There is a simple rule: If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

You may be able to put the cash down but you can't afford a PS3, at least not from what I can read. I would wait until you have a stable financial situation before buying any more luxury products. A Playstation, digital camera, Xbox, ... are all luxury products which should be bought when the finances allow you to after you paid all the bills, other costs and did your savings during that specific month.

IMO, don't expect a price drop until at least Christmas, at the earliest. The new Xbox 360 is $299 and doesn't offer Blu-ray, and the PS3 at 250GB (same as the new 360) is $350, which I think is fair since it does have Blu-ray, and Sony has a $299 version at 120GB, so they're competitive in that regard.

Don't expect a price cut for quite a while. Neither Microsoft or Sony wants to or can afford to at this point, since both are likely just making small profits given the 360's new redesign.

I doubt there will be a price drop. They'll just add more value at the existing prices (or slightly higher prices and bundle Move etc).

They're finally making a profit on each unit they sell, and they'll want to keep it that way as long as possible.

I have also read about 2 more sku numbers applied/submitted. I think with the smaller chip sets out, now is the time to buy one. They are probably the most reliable yet.

Don't read too much into my original post. I have no expenses or bills to pay, other than buying games. The only thing I spend my money on is personal expenses and gifts. I have no debt from college either. I can definitely afford a new console, its just a matter if I should. I am now thinking I will get my 60GB fixed from http://gophermods.com and then sell it on ebay later if/when there's a price drop.

You could always wait till Black Friday. That's around the time some great games are set to arrive and there will most definitely be some great deals around that time. Today's hits will be dirt cheap by then as well. It's a Win/Win if you can wait.

Well, my PS3 (fat style) just kicked the bucket last night and I don't want to pay $150 to get a refurbed one. I think I will sell mine (as broken) and pick up a slim. Good thing I backed up my data yesterday.

Mine died aswell.. Waiting to get someone to fix it for $90 or so since Sony want $350. Sell it on eBay since its a 60gb backwards compatible and buy a slim instead, Shouldnt have to make any gap up or any at all.

This problem seems alot more widespread then Sony let on or will cover.
