For the Move = ripoff Wii crowd...

Sony just needs to come out with games that are dedicated to the Move if they want it to catch on, [....] I think we all know the Sixaxis had this problem, though, so I'd be surprised if Sony didn't learn from that mistake.

Eye Toy / PS Eye has this problem now.

Kudos to Sony for researching and inventing something like this well before the Wii, but the topic is overlooking that this is not why people are calling it the Wii HD. They're calling it that because the Wii was released to the public first and the two essentially have the same mechanics.

I disagree. Shame on Sony for having the technology but not having the balls enough to take a chance on it. Nintendo does/did so kudos to them.

I have a feeling Nintendo were far ahead of them too, seeing as the DS isn't too dissimilar to the Wii when you think about it. I'm sure the R&D had been going for at least a year or two.

PlayStation Move was only really unleashed on the gaming media at E3 2010, which represented the first chance for journalists to flail around with a wand in their hand playing the likes of The Fight: Lights Out, SingStar Dance and Sorcery.

You might be surprised, then, to discover that at least part of the Move tech is kind of old news. Like 10 years old.

Sony had publicly demoed a fairly basic version of the Move technology at the now defunct European game trade show ECTS back in the summer of 2000. Take a look at the below screen. Recognise that big bulbous wand thing he's holding?

Reported in the premier UK edition of Official PlayStation 2 magazine in September that year, Paul Holman, then-Director of Technology at SCEE described the system: "It's all part of a move away from traditional controllers into new areas."

The demo involved plugging a webcam into a USB port (remember, this is way before EyeToy) which analysed and tracked moving props held by a player, which were transformed into in-game objects. Tech demos showed at the time included 'Dungeon' which allowed players to wield a medieval sword and mace, and ?Flying? which had you flapping your arms like wings and flying through a fairly empty desert environment. It's easy to surmise these were the roots of Move - even though Sony's first baby step attempt at motion control with EyeToy was to come first.

Holman also spoke of the possibility of incorporating a digital avatar of the player into a fighting game (he used the example of Tekken, then a Sony exclusive) and the player controlling it through actual kicking and punching, and then went on to suggest that, "One day you might be able to speak to your PS2 and it will react." Which is somewhat ironic, given that these features are far closer to the direction Microsoft has taken with Kinect.

Clearly, new technology has been added since, and the system will undoubtedly have been refined numerous times, but still, it's interesting to think Move has effectively been in development for at least 10 years.

If Move isn't a wii rip-off, then why does it have a Wii Sports counterpart? Why does it have a sub controller?

Well the same goes for microsoft. They're execution is horrendous. They have their wii counterparts as well. But not as bad as Sony.

The thing is, Microsoft already have the hardcore, and need to appeal to the wii audience which they have already done a terrible job with with games like Viva Pinata and Nuts and Bolts. Kinect is their attempt to get to the casual, grand parent market and pre teen market.

Sony already has a casual market. So many people out there bought the ps3 as a blu ray player and casual gaming. They need to focus more on the hardcore market. And in order to get there they need to revamp their entire online and multiplayer interfaces. Add wired headsets to every SKU. Instead they're releasing this PSN+ crap?

They are so confused in their messaging. They are trying to position the move as a peripheral for the hardcore by saying it's more accurate than the wii and you can use it for Socom 4 and Killzone 3 yet they're primary focus is in their Wii Sports counterpart and party games.

It is a Wii rip off. But everything is a rip off of something this day and age. Innovation is far and few between anymore.

"Casual gaming". Same reason Kinec-tal has a WiiSports couterpart. Moms like it.
