Spookie
Source "We can't stop here, this is nerd country," I told the taxi driver as we sped off, leaving behind a group of angry French game developers whose cab I had just snaked. My driver told me this was the busiest he'd ever seen the downtown, what with the Lakers game and the biggest gaming convention in the world. I told him not to compare the cheap theater at the Staples Center with the horrid carnival of souls residing in the LA Convention Center that I was being forced to cover. Seriously it gets better. :D Everyone is making 3D games. Everyone is remaking the games that made them famous. Look for new Sonic, Mortal Kombat, Gears of War, Halo, Zelda, Metroid, Medal of Honor, Castlevania, and Twisted Metal in the coming year. I walked the floor of E3 until my flip-flops broke in protest at the mediocrity. When your footwear is sounding off about the originality of your industry, you know you're in a tough place. First to make the MS fans rage: Microsoft's presentation on Monday set the tone for the week: There's a new Halo game coming out, but this time with space battles. The entire presentation reminded me of that Simpsons episode where Malibu Stacy gets a new hat. Halo: New Hat is due out sometime in the next year, will likely set some sales records, but will move the industry forward as much as a tractor on cinder blocks. Now Ninty: On Tuesday, Nintendo unveiled its own pageant of the past, where the Japanese gaming giant updated all of the titles that made it famous twenty years ago and this seemingly was something to celebrate. If you want to buy Zelda's Wind Waker crossed with Twilight Princess, Nintendo would like to sell you that game. Nintendo is so willing to sell it, in fact, that its willing to put adult men in front of thousands of people and have them swat pretend swords for your amusement. There were also retreads of Metroid and Kid Icarus and if these titles mean anything to you, that means you probably remember blowing into cartridges to make them work. Last but not least Sony: Sony at least knows that the casual gaming market is gone to them. Apple's SDK can't be beaten by conventional platforms or conventional weapons, so at Sony's presentation, Sony reps took time to mew that their PSP platform is for "serious gamers." Which would explain the declining sales. Trolling successful! Prepare for extraction! I may or may not agree with the Halo comments though :F
thealexweb
Nintendo isn't being complacent, that's why its preparing a new console to fight off the competition. Spin it any way you want the iPhone / iPod Touch isn't a serious gaming device and it never will be. iamwhoiam 1 Share

unkdirkpitt
Well, to be fair, all three are lacking in innovation of any sort which can be seen as a form of complacency. I actually don't see anything 'wrong' or 'false' in any of these quoted statements. He's not saying the games aren't good. Though this is fully open to interpretation, and people tend to care more about negativity these days anyways.

rajputwarrior
i actually agree with everything this guy said. to me, e3 was a bust... worst one in a long long time. all the companies did was just rehash the same old with new graphics and new scanarios for their same old characters. Chasethebase Reporter Posted June 20, 2010 Reporter Share Posted June 20, 2010 It's Macworld, they only back two "gaming" platforms, iOS and Mac. The first isn't and the other still requires better hardware and driver support to make progress.

Prince Charming
Lol, Macworld. If I'd gone to Macworld, I would have trolled it far better than this amateurish attempt. Truth.

They have the 3DS which you can argue is somewhat innovative (3D without the glasses) Just like we're seeing on the computer side, the gaming market is maturing. That means we'll be seeing a lot more evolutionary upgrades and less revolutionary ones. In a way you could say the same about Apple's HDD-based iPods. Ayepecks
Any and every Apple/Mac site has a duty to hate things not related to Apple, no matter how unrelated. Didn't you get the memo?
Emn1ty
I can see he spent a grand total of five seconds looking for anything good at E3. This is harsher than my own opinions and I thought them to be pretty bad. Halo is cool and all, but honestly the only really compelling things were 3D without glasses on the 3DS and Codename Kingdoms. Twisted Metal looks cool, but as this article states the majority of the games this year are remakes/sequals (although this article labels everything as just a plain rehash and nothing more). Oh, and forgot about these: - Rage - Fallout On-Line - Hunted: The Demon's Forge
Athernar
I love how the article's examples are all tiny facets of each of the "big 3's" presentations. The last Sony example just makes it feel like the author was rubbing tears from his eye as he wrote the article, which just makes the whole thing hilarious. Billus
As I type this on my MacBook Pro in my air-conditioned hotel room in Los Angeles, I've just sat through presentations by three major console companies and I don't there was an original idea among them. The old is new again. I thought this was pretty hypocritical. Apple always produces the same old and present it as new. Besides no-ones gives a rats arse where you type unless your a food critic. I bet this guy is still waiting his highly anticipated iConsole or whatever. He even says himself that he can't play games. Edit: Oh lordy, just read the comments on the Macworld website. Talk about fanboy paradise.
Emn1ty
I love Crytek, but I don't really know how Codename Kingdoms was compelling when it was just a live action teaser. It is the first I've seen of Crytek moving away from the shooter genre. This looks like either a hack and slash adventure game or even a class based adventure game. That is what I mean by compelling. It is the equivalent of Valve or Bungie releasing an entirely new genre title IMO (and Bungie has a rumored action adventure game in the works). Darth Laidher
What has Apple done? Does anyone remember the Apple Pippin, apple failed at consoles so they might as well stay out of it, sure ipods and ipads can play games, but i dont look at them and say hey this is an awesome gaming platform.I look at them and say hey this is an awesome MP3 player that can watch video and surf the web with a little casual gamming in between. Apple needs to stick to what they know best.
