Question

hey guys,

with the release of WP3 I thought it'd be time to refine my theme a bit (it's been a year!), i'm in the process of selecting fonts right now and I can't really find the perfect one.

it seems like currently the choices can be described as "modern, comfortable to read, free(-ly licensed): choose two", i've found two edit: a few more that are close to what i'm looking for but still not quite... wondering what your opinions are.

Please click through to see the fonts on a sample page in the context of my current theme.

Current font: Lucida Sans (I've linked it for this test so everyone see the same thing, but i'm technically not allowed to do that)

Alternative: M+ (probably not a good choice)

Alternative: Latin Modern Sans

Alternative: Greyscale Basic (is this a little out of place?)

Alternative: Pigiarniq

Alternative: Bitstream Vera Sans

Alternative: Droid Sans

Q: Which one do yo prefer and why?

If anyone has other suggestions I'd be glad to hear them, I'm looking for a modern-looking font that's easy on the eyes for medium to long lengths of text, and of course it'll have to be @font-faceable. It's going to be used in a minimalist theme (an evolution of the current one, will look similar).

on a related note, anyone know any neat tricks to get rid of the font flicker when the fonts load?

thanks everyone!

edit: added some more. Bitstream Vera seems like a strong contender..

M+ has an inconsistent x-height and (to me) looks more like a monospace font than a variable spaced font. But that does make sense since the fonts are primarily designed for their Japanese characters, and Latin text is supposed to be set monospaced when inline with Japanese (apparently, to keep the widths consistent)

I much prefer Latin Modern Sans.
