Setting up a cable router

Recommended Posts

Ok, I am just getting cable access finally in the next 2 weeks or so. I have 3 PC's in my house and already bought the router and the NIC cards. Now I know how to install eveyrthing and all, but after i have it all installed and wired up (house walls too thick for wireless), what do I do exactly? I know I have to set IP's but I'm not exactly sure where and how.

Please dont tell me to google it, I would rather get the advice of people here.

Have all your computers obtain IP's automatically from the router (if it is DHCP capable, which i assume all routers are): Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Properties of "Local Area Connection" and under TCP/IP's properties, have it on auto. That's all, really.

Don't Google it.. Neowin it ;)

OK here is what you do to configure your cable modem to talk to your router.

[Cable Wire] ----> [Cable Modem] ---- [Ethernet Wire] --- [Router WAN Port]

Next you connect the Router to The computers

[Router Switch Port 1] --- [Ethernet Wire] ---> [Computer 1]

[Router Switch Port 2] --- [Ethernet Wire] ---> [Computer 2]

[Router Switch Port 3] --- [Ethernet Wire] ---> [Computer 3]

Once you've plugged everything in First Turn on the Cable Modem and Then the Router. After you do that, switch on each pc 1 at a time, then your done.

By Default, Windows is Set to "Obtain an IP Automatically" From a DHCP Server, the Router will act as the DHCP Server. It will assign by default

PC 1 : 192.168.1.100

PC 2 : 192.168.1.101

PC 3 : 192.168.1.102

(Assuming you turn them on in order)

Finally the Router has its own Internal IP: 192.168.1.1 that you can use to access the internal router firmware so that you can configure port forwarded, passwords, etc...

You can use your web browser to access the router. http://192.168.1.1 you should be promted for a password. enter the correct password and you'll see a web page with your router software displayed.

remember that when you plug the cable modem into the router, that you have to clone the MAC address of NIC card that the isp says is the legal and valid MAC......

well, depending on the router you get, that IP address will vary. Linksys is generally 192.168.1.1, d-link uses 192.168.0.1, etc... so just look at the manual of the router. but just set the computers to get IP address automatically, and it should work fine.

Dude read the Manual

"Dude" the manuals are not all that great so I wanted to ask the neowin community. Now shut up and stop trolling.

don't forget to set-up special applications in the router and what not, otherwise you may find that you won't be able to send files using Instant Messaging software etc.

It should be easy to figure out, if you can't understand or if it's not in the manual most routers have a built in help system with more detail about settings and configuration.

I just got cable internet today, and I can't seem to have the router get a DHCP IP address from the wan (connection to the cable modem). I've tried two routers, a Netgear RT314 and FR114W, both will not get an IP from the wan side. The first time I connected was through the NIC in my PC (BTW: I have comcast). I don't think comcast tracks the modems via the host NIC. I had to provide them with the modem NIC.. I think that how they identify me. So I guess the last thing for me to do is clone my MAC on the router... ? Is that done in one of the config pages?

How odd I just set mine up in just about 15 minutes tonight and I didn't need to post on Neowin to get any help. Am I really a genius? A guru if you will? Will I be shunned by my peers? Do I have any peers? I am Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius.

good for you, but you see with everything I know about computers, I never got a chance to work with broadband hands on, on anyone's system, so, because I wanted to learn something, I asked, so shoot me.

Once again, thanks to those people who did help.: xstaindx, neosignma, liar2, mobidem, I8PP, and goofylogic.
