Wolvereen
I have no idea where it came from, but a piece of software installed instelf into IE. I have Norton Internet Security Enabled. It got through that. I have Ad Aware. It can't get rid of it. I have Spybot S&D. It can't get rid of it. Its not listed in Add/Remove programs either! The software installs a right click option into IE called "rcredfreack". Clicking on it enables a menu with search buttons taking you to "www.find-quick.com". However the page that actually loads is from "srch.lop.com". I can't find anything through google about removing it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated... See screenshot clip... Marshall Veteran Posted July 11, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 11, 2003 More than likely it was bundled with some software you installed recently, it comes with Messenger Plus! if you don't untick the box when installing.
NeoMayhem
THanks, I just got back online after a move... I just checked a couple of days ago, and couldn't find anything....How did it get past all my safeguards?? Windows isn't safe, and no matter how hard you try, it still wont be :p No OS is really safe, just safer then windows :p
MxxCon
i wouldn't say that. if linux system has a rootkit installed, you might as well do clean reinstall. with windows it's still possible to restore system back to normal.
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted July 11, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 11, 2003 You need to actually secure IE. Ad-aware and Spy-bot are not pro-active against that stuff, so they're not going to stop it, although they should have been able to remove it. NIS is the only thing that actually could have stopped it, but in it's defualt config does not block, or even warn when running java or activeX. But anyways to the root of your problem. In I.E. goto tools, internet options, advanced, you'll want to uncheck enable install on demand(IE) and (other), and also uncheck enable third party browser extensions. But since you're using the google bar you might not want to do that. So either turn NIS security up to HIGH or in IE set all the activeX, and active scripting to prompt. That way you'll get a warning when ever a site tries to load something that could do that. When you come across a site that you like and don't wanna keep getting prompted for add it to your trusted sites list.
MxxCon
actually ad-aware plus(or better) has 'pro-active' soluction called ad-watch. it can stop installation of spyware in real time.
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted July 11, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 11, 2003 That didn't work for me. It does stop cookies in real time, but it never did anything for actual spyware. But lavasoft are still great. I mean they moved me over to version 6 for free, but I didn't like Ad-watch.
