swiste
Hi, i have a question for everyone. i have a spare machine, AMD K6-700 Mhz, 40 gig drive, 256 MB of RAM, and I would like to turn it into a fileserver for our home. We have: - iMac -iBook - 2 Compaq Workstations (1.8Ghz, and 2.4Ghz) - Compaq Presario (1.2 Ghz) They are all connected using ethernet, but the ibook and a compaq laptop we have use the Airport Base station to get WiFi access to the net. The spare machine has Windows 2000 Pro on it right now, I just want to set it up as a file server for the network, should I put linux on it, or Windows 2003 Server? What is the easiest way to go about doing it? And can someone explain how? Thanks for your time. - swiste
Marc A.
Easiest will be 2003 server... In my opinion. I (somewhat newb) attempted to set up a file server in Redhat, and spent days F-ing around with that damn httpd.config or whatever... I went over to 2003 server and pressed a few buttons in a wizard. Worked perfectly... Remember, I recommended 2003 cuz it's easier, but when it comes to reliability and junk...
eevoo
i would go with linux, but that is cause that is what i am useing :) and just for info file server is run by samba not httpd, that is for web hosting. samba and swat is the only way to go, imho. :p

syscrash2k
Also, you could try running an internal ftp server instead ;) .
