Onlive

Let me correct you there. ANYONE would be lucky enough to have BB fast enough for it. In the UK the standard speed is what 2mb last year? From what I read on GAF you need 5mb for SD quality. The person who took the 1920 resolution Prince of Persia shots was on 16mb.

16 ****ing mb.

God forbid you have a decent monitor with a large screen size as it's going to look like it's come from a youtube video ran through the mosaic filter in Photoshop a few times!

Well wherever you are getting your information from is clearly full of it. OnLive doesn't support SD resolutions to begin with, nor do they support 1920x1080/1200 resolutions.

The only resolution they currently support is 1280x720. That's it. Nothing more. When you full screen the game, it simply upscales the resolution but it is still 1280x720. You need 5MB/sec for this resolution. They plan to add 1080p later on down, but they don't have their codecs up-to-par yet. All of this can be found on the OnLive FAQ on their website at http://www.onlive.co...ort/performance .

If you guys are going to argue back and forth about what it can and cannot do, use real sources. You don't have to use the service, but at least get your facts straight before you **** on a service you haven't even tried.

Name any casual gamer you know who has heard of this service, then name the casual gamer who has the BB speed adequate enough for this service and then name the casual gamer who is willing to pay through the arse for this service.

edit: When did "casual gamer" because a euphemism for stupid dolt?

Girlfriends? Young kids? Your elitism is surprising. I could think of a few examples of what this would be perfect for, but it's quite pointless as I don't have the desire to spell it out for one person who isn't even interested in the service.

Fair enough everything feeds to you at 720p, but I'm pretty sure their birate/compression might as well be 'standard definition' from some screens.

It's like taking a camera phone recording and re-encoding it to 1280x720 and calling it "HD".

Both of them will buy a Wii, or in the case of my GF a 360, not Onlive.

No, it's like taking a HD source and using compression to make the file smaller. Oh wait, that's exactly what they do. It's akin to HDTV sourced xvids you see all over the internet. They look terrible (I agree that OnLive doesn't look good) but they get the job done.

I'd hope they wouldn't buy the Wii and if they would, they would buy mine as it sits here and does nothing but look out of place with it's dusty, white casing.

Well I have no idea how the kids buying Onlive seeing as it's a subscription based service, which means the parents then need to know about it and/or the kid needs to ask the parents for it. How likely is it for masses of youngsters to go to school and come home saying "mommy I want Onlive for my birthday"?

The marketing for this product is a marketers nightmare and the market it's aimed at is a complete cluster**** of identity crisis soup. The hardcore are not going to adopt this, and I foreschedule a very low percentage of this "casual market" being uplifted from the comfortable, reliable and familiar home console under the TV/handheld.

Meaning Onlive will bleed money out of it's ass due to all the back end processing going on/servers they have in place.

It's technology of 2050 attempted to be launched today into a market that currently basically has no demand for a product like this for the time being.

Bad comparison. The "HDTV-sourced xvids" still look decent despite being sized down. Sethos and Spookie have shown that OnLive doesn't look that good. When it comes to the UK, I'll try it out, as I've got a 50Mb connection, so I'd like to see if it'll look any better, but frankly, my PC's just about good enough to run most of today's games at high settings.

Not a bad comparison at all. They both look terrible compared to the source, and when you put them right next to each other (like Sethos did) you realize how terrible it looks. Xvids look terrible in motion, and even worse in still shots, just like OnLive.

OnLive running on a 15" laptop looks perfectly fine. It's when you upscale it to a 22"+ screen where it starts to look really bad. The analogy is same.

Really? OnLive is suitable for "girlfriends"? LOL. If my boyfriend suggested OnLive to me, I'd have to question his loyalty to me.

Dolt = A slow witted or stupid person.

Anyway, I could see Onlive being successful to a small extent.

BT are going to have Onlive, and are rolling out 40MB Broadband now.

Sure BT couldn't even run a bath, but some mugs still use them for BB.

The only viable ISP I can see even coming close to using this properly would be Virgin, but then of course there's the problems that they have with...errm, 'sharing' content. Plus, it's expensive.

If you're on the 50Mb service, you're not subjected to any bandwidth limits, but yeah, it's still expensive, and it's way above the recommend speed for OnLive.

I think it is a good service, but the picture quality could be far better. :)

Indeed it could. It's not easy to instantly stream that HD content like that to so many different environmental obstacles. It will take a long time before everyone is up to speed with such a service. Not sure they will have the funding to last that long though.

Here's how this will go down in places like Australia, UK, etc that have metered bandwidth.

>sign up for Onlive

>buy a bunch of games

>use up all your bandwidth streaming games in 2 weeks

>no games and slow Internet for the rest of the month

Thread Cleaned (as best as I could without completely destroying some valid conversation, I may have missed one or two things).

It takes two to tango I have always said, and in this case there were a few other people dancing as well towards the end. Let's just all agree to disagree at this point and move on please.

Glad the thread was cleaned, so people can actually discuss the topic at hand. Last time I checked it, it was full of retarded memes and random smileys.

I'd like to know how well OnLive is doing. They need to issue a press release.

Well, I have added 8 people to my OnLive friends list from the OnLive forums, but they are never on :( There are plenty of strangers playing games on the Arena channel though.

The forums themselves seem pretty quiet too. Not sure how big (or small) this will end up being. Meh..if anything, it's free for a year. I am not holding my breath.

You're expecting that from a press release? What are they going to tout?

Hey you guys! Well we launched, at least we're not the phantom!

I'm not sure about the Arena channel. If you scroll up/down or left/right quickly, you will notice that it's the same few people. It appears that there are lots, but it seems to be a facade.

You're getting annoying. It's one thing to give your opinion, but it's another to **** on a thread every few hours because you have some odd problem with a service you've never tried.

Got my founders invite on Saturday and love it! :woot: I have had no problems even over WiFi.

FYI: To connect over WiFi you need to bridge your WiFi adapter and LAN adapter. :shiftyninja:
