th3rEsa
As I fell in love with awesome on Linux, I really wonder if there is a similar tiling window manager available for Windows. dwm-win32 looks fine but is stuck in alpha and seems to be abandoned. bug.n seems to aim for what I need but has some major bugs left. HashTWM would be perfect if it had a slim "workspace" bar like the other two... (Or is there an adequate replacement for the Windows task bar? I actually don't want to replace my explorer.exe shell.) Something with the look and feel of awesome WM would be perfect. I know, quite ambitious, but ... Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/914778-search-awesome-wm-for-windows/ Share on other sites
Lazure
Isn't 'awesome' extremely plain looking? like almost to the point that the menus and panels all look flat as if they're drawn in a terminal? Lazure
How is Windows Aero ugly? It's the best looking UI windows has ever had. It actually looks like something that fits very well in the modern day of technology. th3rEsa
How is Windows Aero ugly? It's the best looking UI windows has ever had. Don't know about you, but for me an OS is something to work with. No need for transparency, fancy window effects, extra-large window buttons and all that stuff. The first thing I usually disable when on a Windows Vista+ PC is Aero. I go well with Windows Classic. (Oh, and Aero is quite a resource hog. Not so secondary when on a laptop...) tiling window managers > aero See above. (And I wouldn't call Aero's "snap" functionalities "tiling".) Lazure
You can't work with something looking nice at the same time? Classic looks like crap, too. Also, Aero is NOT a resource hog. Modern computers have like 4GB of RAM, and Aero only uses about 100mb of that, TOPS. It's actually very light in resource usage, and it's faster and smoother with its GPU acceleration. th3rEsa
You can't work with something looking nice at the same time? Of course, but Aero does not look nice but distracts me from my actual work with all its effects. Annoying kiddie stuff. Classic looks like crap, too. Depends on what you want to do. For me, a computer is something to work with, not something to show your friends and brag how fine it looks. Modern computers have like 4GB of RAM, and Aero only uses about 100mb of that That's about 100 MB too much. 4 GB RAM does not mean "4 GB to waste". We are getting a bit OT here, I presume. You'd better PM me for further discussion about why Aero rocks. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/914778-search-awesome-wm-for-windows/#findComment-592821536 Share on other sites

Jen Smith
I use Awesome on my Arch system as well, absolutely brilliant for a console junkie like myself. The only thing that I found that came kinda sorta slightly remotely similar to Awesome was HashTWM, which surprisingly works rather well even in Windows 7. Doesn't have Awesome's extendability, but the basic tiling functionality is there. I don't use it regularly on my Windows systems, I like a tiling manager for a terminal environment but not so much when Windows does it's own thing just fine. th3rEsa
HashTWM (listed in my initial posting) is missing a status bar, but it seems to be a very stable application indeed. I just took at peek at his Git repo, looks like it was just updated a few days ago on the 22nd, so hopefully he's still actively working on the thing. It takes near zero memory, and he claims you can run multiple instances on it with another virtual desktop manager if you make multiple configurations, so the workspace support is kinda sorta there already.. just needs a good statusbar. (I love Win7's taskbar, but for this sort of thing it falls flat.. altho I suppose if you make the task bar more XP style... it might do it.) Edit Forgot a program I used to use way back, Stardock's Objectbar. You can build a task bar out of that, among other things. I've seen Gnome and Mac knockoffs done with it, I don't see why an Awesome knockoff couldn't be done too. Not a freebie though, and haven't used it in about five years, no idea what 7 compatibility is like. Was pretty slick in XP though. th3rEsa
Ah, the link to his Git repository was broken on the website... According to his blog, the 22nd commit was a patch sent to him. Not sure if there is any "active development" right now... Hmm, my taskbar already is "XP style", but somehow it is still not the same. (Maybe I should try a VDM which displays sort of a statusbar.) No problem @ your attention. Thank you for helping me out anyway. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/914778-search-awesome-wm-for-windows/#findComment-592821710 Share on other sites
th3rEsa
After contacting the author, I am currently playing with bug.n 3.6 alpha which works almost perfectly, compared to 4.0. Including working workspace support. :woot: (The missing clock is a visual glitch, but not a problem for me.) Turning off Aero on a computer that has a dedicated GPU will only slow it down, not speed it up. It's such a retardedly common myth. I totally agree. Turning off Aero and using classic theme in Windows 7 is a retarded move. It not only slows down the computer with dedicated graphics, it also disables very useful features and composition, and it is a 1995 look being used in a 2009 OS, whose UI layout is NOT really compatible with it. Look how awful a lot of programs are presented when classic is used, like calculator and explorer itself! I hope Windows 8 will remove classic altogether, so that people will stop trying to bring that ancient mess into the modern day. Look at MACOSX, how many people using Snow Leopard have it looking like System7 macs with GPU acceleration turned off? None. NONE. So why is it that people put Windows 95 look on Windows 7 and turn off the composition and GPU acceleration Aero provides? denahv 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/914778-search-awesome-wm-for-windows/#findComment-592826510 Share on other sites
Jen Smith
Nice, glad to see that he's still working on the thing. A little more work and it'll be a pretty decent clone of AwesomeWM. And I would have to agree, disabling DWM/Aero is actually not that great. The memory savings versus the performance hit (at least for me) just isn't worth it. You can keep DWM going, just disable the transparency, shadowing and other effects if you don't care for them. DWM not only provides the pretty bling, but also really improves the overall rendering performance, and frees the CPU up from doing the work as the GPU is handling it instead. Shoot I keep it running even on my Server 2008R2 machines, just because it makes the remote desktop connections noticeably slower if it's off.
