Capcom: PS4, Xbox 720 'in two years time'

Tuesday 29-Jun-2010 11:45 AM Ex-Sony man reckons next-gen must be coming soon

Microsoft recently put a five year lifespan on the 360's motion cam, Kinect, but Capcom's David Reeves reckons we'll be seeing the next generation of consoles much sooner.

The Capcom exec and ex-Sony man admitted he has no inside knowledge on PlayStation anymore, but feels that we would be seeing the PS4 and Xbox 720 within two to three years.

"Anything they can add to revive and pique interest in the games until we have another clash of the titans in two years time," Reeves told GI.biz when asked about Move and Kinect.

When asked to elaborate on his prediction he said: "Two to three years, I reckon so. I don't have any inside information. All the first-parties have got to be working on something.

"The tricky thing is when do you put a stake in the ground on technology? That's the problem," he continued.

"You can be waiting a few extra months to implement something, but you've got to set a date to go with a certain chip at a certain point otherwise you're going to miss the key milestones."

The immediate impact of both Kinect and Move is still yet to be seen. But if analysis suggesting that the purchase intent for both is 'relatively low' is accurate, Microsoft and Sony might have to do more to sustain the lifespan of their respective boxes.

I have my doubts, we might start to hear about their upcoming models but I'm sure the cost of this generation will push back a normal console cycle.

Although, I badly want new consoles - We need 720p / 60FPS MINIMUM standards.

I wish people would stop calling the next version the "Xbox 720". It's just so ridiculous. Besides, didn't I read somewhere that Microsoft's retiring the Xbox name and using something different for the next console?

I doubt they will drop the Xbox name, you don't just throw away a name that is so deeply rooted, no way. I am uncertain about the 720 part however, I believe it was said years ago they wouldn't be calling it that for sure.

Didn't stop MS launching the 360 with the huge dent in their wallets left over from the Xbox.

Because the thing wasn't a huge success and they had to get something worthwhile out the door, now they are in a great position because none of the competitors aren't moving that many pieces as well, again

due to the cost of everything. Especially the game developers need to be given a break, as generations progress games have a longer development cycle and cost a lot more to produce.

Well even with all their debts they've not slowed down in any department. I'm not so sure they'll be the first to market with the next Xbox anyway, at least for QC reasons.

Also, as for names, Xbox 1080. Every game is 1080p default / goes with the degrees trend? :p

Xbox 360 made sense, but any other stupid "angles" or long winded digit names would be silly IMO.

Call it Xbox 3 and be done with it. XB3 for short.

They better not come out with one of these retarded spelt wrong on purpose or "hip" names every company and their dog are naming phones/other hardware devices. I hate the lot.

Simple and professional please.

Names have never been Microsoft's strong point though lol. The same old reasons will stop them from calling it Xbox 3 too, it's "inferior" to "PS4".

Assuming Sony keep calling it that.

No, they haven't slowed down they just shift focus to developing things that can extend and promote the current generation, instead of thinking about the next generation - Definitely not a bad thing though :)

What I will look forward to is seeing the next generation console 'race' between the Xbox and Playstation. The Playstation had a huge advantage by having popular lest-gen consoles and the Xbox was Microsoft's odd

looking baby that never really clawed its way up. Now they are properly head-2-head and the fight is on

And Xbox Milo sounds good ... :shiftyninja:

They don't want to call it XBox 3 for the same reasons they didn't call the 360 the Xbox 2. So it'll be something else, probably not a number I'd have to guess.

give us 1080p 60fps 3D, bluray, hdmi 1.4, usb3, lightpeak, a nice fast CPGPU, integrated power brick and a good quality heatsink and fan and i think everyone would be happy.

This would give us better looking graphics due to new gpu features, smoother video and all games in 1080p, what more could a guy want?

And have it priced at $599? Look how well that worked out.

Code names have always been the source of the naming scheme in the Xbox's history, so no doubt we'll have a better idea once hardware news leaks.

Direct X & Xenons etc

it doesn't have to be $600 at launch, also they make money on games, 360/ps3 were both sold at a loss at launch.

gpu's aren't that far away from being able to do 1080p 60fps 3d for the pc at the moment, by the time the next gen consoles are out they will. usb, lightpeak and bluray are all pretty cheap. You can get a bluray reader for ?40 now.

The next Xbox will for sure, just like how the 360 supprots DX9 with some bits of DX10 in as well (DX9.0L iirc). As for the next playstation? You'll be stuck with OpenGL 3.x for that platform.

Ignore Nintendo, one of the best, why don't they :p

I say we will get a Wii2 or something, which will be equally as good :)

He's only mentioning PS3 and 360 because 1) he worked for Sony and 2) Nintendo aren't "direct competition", in their eyes.

Or so they keep saying.

No thanks to 3D. My eyes hurt enough after a couple hours of gaming now already. 3D would make my head explode. I get a bad enough headache from 3D movies as it is. Personally I'm already sick of 3D and it can't go away soon enough.

Indeed, prolonging a game's development time and possibly compromising the overall performance / visuals of the game when developers start to put more focus on the fantastic gimmick 3D.

Yeah, XBox is now a brand. It would be silly to stop using it...

Yeah. I agree. With Sony just now making a profit on the PS3, Microsoft could really put them in hurt by releasing a new console though... Though I don't expect new consoles next year, 5 years I think is a bit unrealistic... 3 I could believe...
