BioShock 2 was not

Recommended Posts

I had the 1st and played through the 360 version 2wice. Got it for my ps3 and ran through it again! Absolutely loved it. Everything about it.

So happens I finished the 2nd today (err yesterday actually, it's late!). I started it right off the bat on hard difficulty and what the hell, went for the no vita-chamber trophy as well.

The story was garbage. New characters just kept popping in and I was like who the f is this now? In the end, just a bunch of nobodies.

Very atmospheric but having played through the first I just didn't have that awe feel. The first felt much bigger/grander. I didn't find myself staring out of windows (did this one even have windows?) and looking at scenery as much as I did the first 3 times I played through the 1st.

It felt VERY enclosed. Never would I have imagined that I would get to walk around outside the confines of Rapture as a Big Daddy yet feel so confined to a small area. The ocean felt like nothing more than an aquarium.

Having started it on Hard difficulty, the game was incredibly easy. The deeper I went, the easier it became. No big boss fights in the end, (or anywhere for that matter-just one that i remember) just swarms of mobs. Which were never a problem considering the arsenal at your disposal. Ammo and Health was never an issue unlike the first BS at hard difficulty. Not to mention the overkill gene tonics that just made easy-mode out of everything thrown at you.

Nothing strategic about how you would enter an encounter either. Felt like flammable puddles were just dropped in at random. Just triggered survival events. The scripting was really bad and predictable.

Very disappointed with its story. No twists, no real presence of a villain, beside some stupid old lady talking down to you throughout the game.

No real story at all, really.

I wanted so much more from this sequel but deep down I knew that there was little room left after the first for improvement. So I was just playing myself by expecting more. MP is very basic and boring.

7.5-10

I have to agree with pretty much everything you said. I also played on hard from the onset...and like most games, was conserving ammo, etc, for the final boss battle...and then nothing. Finished the final scene with only the shotgun and plasmids!

Always said they should have moved on after the original.

The first was great, the 2nd bored me to tears. There was nothing original about it. It flopped simply because it was a poorly designed game that was full to the brim of 'Ive seen it all before'.

I really liked BioShock 2, but it was absolutely nowhere near the brilliance of the original - there was nothing surprising or shocking about the plot. Plus the whole being able to walk outside of Rapture was extremely disappointing. We all expected more. Hopefully we'll get it eventually.

TBH I prefer the second. The plot is certainly not as strong the second time around (in fact the first hour or two I was wondering why I was there at all) and there isn't the great plot twist this time, but in terms of gameplay mechanics I thought it was refined pretty well over the original. Combat especially was just far more fun with the ability to use both plasmids and guns at once. I swear in the original I'd use one or the other because swapping was a pain so from a strategic point of view this opened combat up in my book. That and some of the smaller things like hacking not taking you out of the game this time.

also, the ending lame.. Bio 1's ending was epic.

See I thought the game ended on a low note. The third last level was pretty non eventful, the level spent playing as a big Daddy after that was pretty dull IMHO and while there was a nice lead up to the boss briefly near the end, ultimatly the boss fight itself was rather craptastic and didn't feel like it belonged in the game. Not that the ending ruined the game, but I think Bioshock one sort of peaked mid way into the game.
