Peter Molyneux?s told attendees at GameHorizon in Newcastle that Fable III will be released in episodic chapters via Xbox Live Marketplace ?soon after? the retail release of the game in October.

The concept was first tried when Molyneux announced at the Microsoft press conference at gamescom last August that Fable II would be released in the same way.

The first episode went on to do 1.5 million downloads, with the whole thing raking in over $15 million in revenue, he added at the event.

He said back at GDC in March that scheme was ?successful.?

?Soon after the retail launch we?re doing episodic,? said the Lionhead boss. ?We break it down in chapters. We give away the first chapter entirely free, the first hour.

?When you reach a certain point in the game it says ?thank you for playing the pilot of Fable 3, do you want to spend an extra 2-5 or whatever dollars to buy the next episode, or buy the whole lot?? Press ?yes? and you will immediately continue playing.?

He also said he during the session that he wants Fable III to sell 5 million units, bringing in $150 million in revenue.

Fable III releases at retail in October for Xbox 360. It?ll launch as a download on PC.

Thanks, GI.

that's cool, the ones they had for Fable II weren't the greatest added content, i mean Knothole Island, but it was still fun. Fable II was just an awesome experience overall, i miss the time i spent with it.

They're not talking about DLC.

They're talking about the same thing they did with Fable 2 after release. you can buy the game piece by piece. or in episodes.

But it will cost twice as much as the box though? :p

360 gamers like options

Besides they gave away the first part of Fable 2 for free, I can see them doing that again. It works out the same price as retail at launch.

Obviously retail will be lower much later, but that goes for everything.

oh ok, gotcha. still, if it's an option then what's wrong with that? there's nothing ever bad about having options. better than none!

Doing it over XBL makes a dev and MS more money since you don't have to share anything with retail shops. Since this works out and seems to be catching on I can see more devs doing it in time, maybe 1 month after retail copies hit.

Honestly if all 360 games also released on XBL either on launch or sshortly thereafter.... I'd be a lot shorter on cash :p

And haters will come into every MS thread and be haters.

Indeed, I love options, and I want digital. I wish I could just buy Fable 3 in one download via Games on Demand on day one.

Probably, the retail market is far too competitive, always kicks digital distribution to the curb (on consoles anyway, Steam does good sales on the PC).

The amount of games you can get for £30, or even sub £30 a few weeks after release, if not even before release is crazy.

Retail likes to take a hit on something in the hopes you'll buy something else that's not sold at a loss. The fact games drop down that low and that quick makes me wonder if retail isn't just forgoing it's cut of the profits, no way the publisher/dev isn't going to get paid regardless. They're probably not even sold at a loss now that I think about it, that's probably the price retail paid for them, so they're breaking even and making money on whatever else you might buy in the process.

Doing it this way does provide people with more options, but the way retailers (especially online) cut prices so soon after launch, it isn't really worth it.

I never buy anything else.

I'm talking about websites as well.

yes spookie, your vitriol actually hit upon a valid point - i willingly choose to pay more to MS for Xbox Live because for 3 1/2 years now i've been on the monthly payment plan, which is $8 a month. i can get the $35 annual sub like everyone else from Amazon and what not, but i prefer to pay small increments periodically. that's options.
