I am having same issues with my forum lately. Forum runs on SMF 2.0 and with 1000 users it consumes 100% available bandwidth within less then month. The limit is 70GB/month.
I tried forcing more functions to run through cache but its still ineffective.
So now I'm looking for another forum engine to replace current SMF. I'm thinking of MyBB (also PHPBB3 - but I'm afraid the story of SMF will happen again, what's your opinion? I think that there will be a lot of fun with converting the database, won't it?
