  1. 1. Which site looks better?

Question

Hi guys,

I just wanted to know your opinion on this question: which of these two sites looks better? I came up with http://elementary-project.awardspace.biz/ for the elementary OS project, but they were already working on http://tai.square7.ch/, but I'm trying to convince them to change to mine :)

Constructive criticism is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Also, as you'll notice, please just judge the homepages, as the other ones are not yet implemented

The first one looks better but you could improve it by changing the fonts of the three top links and also the title says "about elementary".

Also, the little text or description in the bottom links looks a bit blurry. You can make them clearer. The fonts are good, though.

Judging the biz index , it has a clean index . Thumbs up for keeping it minimal .

I'd probably change the iMac screen with the actual screenshots , in a similar sliding fashion . Maybe some other font would blend better .

The Header , right hand : bad . You could make them as tabs , toggled onhover() with a gray tint on top ?

The .ch is bad on many functionality levels . On a quick look , discover doesn't render properly, nor dl . ( but you've mentioned not to address those )

Also the js slideshow code needs some fixing , it outputs errors depending on weather manual browsing is forward or backward .

As far as marketing goes , a page that says nothing about your product is blank .

Don't mind me . Polishing is easy stuff . You've got the creative part right .

Good luck !

neither of them work properly.

They both look equally bad. Start over.

I think I figured out how you two have so many posts

thanks for the suggestions! :) I agree with the nav bar, it definitely needs changing. Also, those are the actual screenshots ;)

I like elementary-project.awardspace.biz. Looks much cleaner than tai.square7.ch

The only thing i think you should change are the colors on the Download, Burn & Install buttons. Maybe use your new buttons?

elementary-project.awardspace.biz

I like it all but the font of the links in the top right corner.

the first one is better, it gave me an idea of what on earth it was straight away.

kinda gave more, but without being cluttered.

Only the index for the .biz one loads. All three nav links lead to 404's for me.

.biz -

1) I think it would look a lot better if you properly aligned everything into a grid. The lefts and rights and tops and bottoms of different elements don't really match - it would look much better if they did I think.

2) The navigation links should probably have a different look than the plain text. Yes they are a lot bigger (with a different font), but they would look nicer and be more usable of you changed the color and/or background color for them and added a more noticeable hover state.

3) The slideshow on the monitor should probably pause if you hover over them (and be linked to bigger versions of the screenshots) - so that you can take a better look at them if you want.

.ch -

1) The navigation bar has too much whitespace in the middle.

2) The editbox (that I believe is the search box) looks kind of out of place.

3) The "Discover" page has the "elementary" in a different font (arial/helvetica?) than the rest of the pages. (or maybe you have the generic "sans-serif" set on most pages, but for "discover" you've hard coded it to use arial/helvetica).

4) There's too much whitespace on the left and right in the main content area in the "Discover page".

5) "Discover" page also has the grid alignment problem.

6) "Discover" page has too much content without a proper flow to it. I think it would look better if you increased the font size, and only made at max 3 sections viewable at the same time - and adding next and previous buttons for navigation. This would, I believe, also cause the "main content" area have the same height across all pages.

7) "Download" page has the alignment problem too - only to a much greater extent.

I apologize if I'm overdoing it....

In conclusion, I won't tell you which one "looks better", but which I think is better suited for the purpose (seemingly) - the .biz one. Because you don't have a lot of content at the moment, I don't think you need a full width layout, so the .ch one is not really appropriate. Just my 2 cents...

thanks for the in-depth suggestions! :) as for the other pages not loading, read the first post.

1. I'm using the 960 grid template, and, while everything is not vertically aligned, it is aligned in a grid

2. i agree, I need to change the nav bar

3. good suggestion, will be implemented soon :)

Main issue I see with the .ch version is that it is pointlessly taking over the whole page. There's no need to spread stuff out so much. It's a pain to take in on a large monitor.

I also like .biz more because it is a simpler, more "obvious" design. Good use of colour, too. However, I would say there's no need for an "about" header. I'd make the first lines of the blurb bigger and it serves that purpose wonderfully. Simple and to-the-point.

I agree.

and great idea, will see if that'll work :)

Neither.

The fact that the image of the laptop is larger than the screenshots themselves are a huge turn off.

Nix the laptop. Are you advertising the laptop? No. Show off Elementary. The mac has nothing to do with it so it's not needed.

You're just conforming to what you've seen countless other people try to utilize in their sites and fail.
