  1. 1. Which site looks better?

Question

Hi guys,

I just wanted to know your opinion on this question: which of these two sites looks better? I came up with http://elementary-project.awardspace.biz/ for the elementary OS project, but they were already working on http://tai.square7.ch/, but I'm trying to convince them to change to mine :)

Constructive criticism is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Also, as you'll notice, please just judge the homepages, as the other ones are not yet implemented

Looking at the updated http://elementary-project.awardspace.biz/ - love the update to the blurb

the download, burn & install buttons from http://tai.square7.ch/

I think they would look better on http://elementary-project.awardspace.biz/ which has the green, blue & red buttons.

Hmm, personally I think that suffers from a lack of vibrancy. Without wanting to sound like an anti-Mac person - it would be too Mac-like. It's not selling OS X.

Neither.

The fact that the image of the laptop is larger than the screenshots themselves are a huge turn off.

Nix the laptop. Are you advertising the laptop? No. Show off Elementary. The mac has nothing to do with it so it's not needed.

You're just conforming to what you've seen countless other people try to utilize in their sites and fail.

Dude, his is the one with the monitor, not the laptop.

In any case, I agree. The perspective on the laptop is just confusing, and too Mac.

What are you talking about? s/mac/laptop. Same thing. First glance I thought it was a MBP so I said laptop--Look over it again and it's vastly similar to a MBP. So my fruedian slip of mac is still fitting.

The second ones icons and writing on the screen are small but large enough to be annoying and my eyes are drawn to them trying to read.

What I meant is:

You appear to be telling him to make changes on the site design that isn't even his. That's my point :p

His is the one which is just a monitor. The one that features a laptop is the one we're comparing it to.

I like yours much better.

The two gripes I have with the site are the navigation links and the steps. I think the links would look better if they were either tweaked or redesigned to match tabs, as someone else has mentioned.

I also think the colors of the three steps aren't fitting for this site. I'd go with maybe a darker grey to add some contrast, without sticking out too much.

Here is a quick concept of what I mean.

one of the sites looks like apple.com, and that's not very appealing.

the one with colour is nice.

As far as looking like a Mac, I changed mine to look like a generic monitor. :)

Looking like a Mac had nothing to do with it. I said the fact that the image of the computer/monitor/etc is far larger than the actual screenshot was the problem. Not the brand, the concept.

The website isn't about a monitor, laptop, etc. It's about Elementary. Show off Elementary and not a product that has a "screenshot" of it showing.

I think it looks tacky and just because you see other people using that "screenshot" in a product (mac/imac/monitor) doesn't mean you should as well. It's bad UX practice.

I would rather see screenshots that focus on key elements on Elementary that are large than a mini bland screenshot in a product I may or may not own.

Here are some ideas:

thanks, and I have to say that I included the monitor just because I thought a screenshot looked rather plain.

I will have a look at your links, thanks :)

Not sure if you'll still looking for feedback but I think idiots like primexx and +vice should be banned from any forum other than Off-topic talk due to being incapable of providing even a semi-decent response.

Anyway, i opted for the http://elementary-project.awardspace.biz/ though I'd say it depends what you're doing with the websites.

I prefer that one simply because of the clarity and useability on it looks really neat, it all fits on one page, looks clean and works smoothly. If it was more for a software download page/site then I'd opt for that.

The second one I really like the header, looks minimal but is capable of providing more navigation, perhaps better for a support page or a site dedicated to more than trying to promote something for download - the search looks like it could perhaps do with touching up though; i think the image takes up too much space, forces you to scroll and isn't entirely necessary.

Really like them both though, nice and sleek. Good work!
