LAMP and mysql issues

Question

I set up a basic lamp (Linux - Apache, Mysql, Php) server with ubuntu server 10.04.

I am running it on a virtual machine. It currently has 512MB assigned to it, but I've had it has high as 2GB for testing purposes. Regardless of memory assigned the problem I'll describe still occurs regardless.

When I fire up the server, everything is quick and snappy. Pages load right away. I've got wordpress installed as the homepage and it comes up immediately. However, after I let the server sit idle, (i.e I'll go to work for 10 hours) I'll come back and pages take forever to load.

I check the load, and its never too bad, in fact most of the time it's 0.01, 0.00, 0.02 etc... RAM usage is pretty good, I've got about 256MB free.

I noticed when I stop and restart the mysql service, the page loads return to normal and load right away. As a result I believe the issue comes down to mysql. Are there any tweaks I could perform to mysql to see if I can prevent this issue from happening?

The new adjustments seem to be working good.

To be honest I just started changing values in my.cnf on a trial and error basis with a little help from google.

I adjusted the cache size and limit down to 1MB, not sure if thats a good idea or proper way to do things, but since its on a home intranet and only used by 2 people, it seems to be running fine:
