Anyone have BT Openworld as a Broadband ISP? ....

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm currently thinking of getting BT Openworld Broadband, as NTL or Blueyonder isn't available in my area :( - and won't be for available for a year and a half :s :| ....

Most of my close friends who live near me say that BT Openworld Broadband is quite good, on the other hand I've heard these horror stories of everything going wrong with people's telephone lines after converting to ADSL, connection to ADSL, the BT modem is crap etc ....

Could members who have had experience with BT Openworld Broadband share their experience?, thanks :) ....

I was thinking of getting Pipex ADSL, but I'm not too keen on giving out credit card details :|, plus BT allows me to pay Openworld Broadband on my regular BT phone bill  ....

Radish?

I would urge you not to go with BTopenworld. I know it can be tempting to stick it all with BT but your not going to get the best price or service from them.

BT (this should come as no surprise) are as you say, prone to problems. Of course many users also say they are fine.

I highly recommend "Griffin", i have contact with a few Griffin users and use a server connected via them and they are great for reliability and speed at least. I'm told the tech support is good but not the best, its also only ?20 p/month i think.

And also recommend "PlusNet" who I'm told are not bad.

Edit: Forgot to comment on Pipex. They are fair, but allot of people moan about the service.

You are most likely aware of the BB at adslguide.org.uk but if not check it out for comments on the service of ADSL providers.

I checked out the BT Broadband comments at adsl.org.uk and they were pretty good, people were happy with their connection, a few problems to do with service outages etc .... but nothing more than that :) ....

Thanks for the advice (Y) ....

Cool (Y) ....

Is there a bandwidth restriction on BT Broadband Stevie? - like how much you can download in a day? ....

Nope there arent any bandwidth type restrictions, they block port 25 so you cant run your own mail servers (not sure on the port but im certain that we cant run mail servers), but this is a precaution against spamming i assume (again, not sure on this).

Had it for coming up to 2 years, had no major problems at all, bout 60k tops i get which isnt bad :)

I've been an op in BT's unofficial irc support channel since a few months after BTinternet first went live, a long time ago, and I would *urge* you to not go with them for ADSL.

Go with Eclipse or Nildram.

AFAIK only the faster ADSL connections have the download caps, but these are extremely generous 150GB/month caps. I've signed up for nildram, only 22.99 per month on their 'wires only' service. I've bought my router and plugged it in ready to detect the ADSL signal when my exchange goes live next month (I can't wait!! :woot: :woot: )

Congrats extreme_madness (Y), hope everything goes well , but I really wish I had the option of NTL or Blueyonder in my area :( ....

I'm gonna go with BT Broadband for now, see how it goes :) ....

Thanks for the help guys (Y) - I'm looking forward to ADSL  ....

Yeah, go for BT at least you know the company, and as you say NTL will be in your area in a year and a half, so you can always get on that service then if BT is not your cup of tea.

Shame you can't get NTL/Blueyonder cause BT Openworld sucks BIG TIME.

I had it since a month after it was launched in the UK and the whole testing XP with BT Openworld was hell. I hate any broadband connection that goes via USB. Also, if you get a spot of lightning you gotta power the PC down as the BT line can bring the shock straight into your USB port :D

Also the whole dialing to get connected is annoying too and the non-static IP :(

I've been on NTL for about 6months now on their 1meg service and it's much better than BTs. You pay ?40/month for BT and ?35 for NTLs 1meg or ?25 for 600k. Once you can get NTL - get :) :)

I'm getting BT Broadband cream, not Openworld - it costs ?27 for 512k:)) ....

Openworld is a true dedicated broadband line, normal BT Broadband is the service via your phone line:yes:: ....

Hope you checked your contract length as BT openworld had a 12 month one which is a bit crap if it turns out to be crap.

I persoanlly went with eclipse. They even activated a week before they were supposed to and didn't charge me. One of the cheapest too with a 1 month min contract

I know cream, but there's nothing I can do about it in my area :( - all I can do is wait for the next one and and half years for NTL or Blueyonder  ....

I hope the BT Broadband works out well  ....
