Anyone have BT Openworld as a Broadband ISP? ....

Recommended Posts

Radish u did the right thing going ahead with Bt openworld...i've had it for over 1.5years now and only had downtime twice..and that was within the first week of activation...now u cant beat that...and since then..not a single downtime whatsoever...i can stay connected on the net for days on end without being disconnected...i've downloaded gigs on end..and the service has been top notch...

i do realise Bt is expensive copared to others...but paying that price..u get much better service...just make sure u read the instructions etc for installing the usb modem and initiallising the net etc properly..and u then u wont have problems...[this is where Bt get their most complaints from customers..the part where to install software etc..the novice people do it wrong therefore the high complaints rate..]

overall...u can now download pRon quickly and effieciently..lol..only jk....he he

anymore questions Radish..please ask away... :)

Nope there arent any bandwidth type restrictions, they block port 25 so you cant run your own mail servers (not sure on the port but im certain that we cant run mail servers), but this is a precaution against spamming i assume (again, not sure on this).

Does this mean you can't send e-mail?, because isn't port 25 used for SMTP? ....

Means you can't run your own SMTP Mail server that's ;)l ;)

Static IP address is an IP address that never changes and isn't dynamic at all. ISPs generally assign 1-3 static IP address's per customer. Problem with a static IP is hacking etc, with BT you just disconnect and re-conn:)t :)

And is there a way in Windows XP to be constantly connected to ADSL, from the time you logon, or say when you reboot and come back to Windows and it's automatically connected? ....

Yes

ADSL is configured just like a dial up connection just a tad faster ;)

A quick and easy way to do it would be to to place IE in your startup folder and set the options so it dials up automatically.

I'm not sure what would happen if the line dorpped for some reason, but i'm sure someone else could come up with a prog or script to do this.

The other option would be to buy a routr but thats a bit more expensive....

Out of interest when did you order and whats your activation date?

The only downside is the stuppid 'Frog' modem lol! but, apart from that... its quite good. If you have SKY though you can/could (not sure) get it through them for ?28 a month. Dont know if the offer is still on though. I went like this and I only get charged ?27 a month. Strang:s:s

It's ?27 a month if your on Monthly Payment Plan with BT (Don't know if you are actually on that PigeonHead ....), otherwise ?28 a mont:):) ....

I've always had BTOpenwound (signed up for the pre-rollout installation; cost me nothing!) and the only niggle I have is with the speed. A quick check with any bandwidth testing site normally shows about 47K/s max. However, P2P has merrily maxed the connection out, so it all depends...

As to automatically "dialling", you don't have to have IE starting up, any program that accesses the net will do (my gateway machine updates the network time from USNO, requiring "dial-up", sets the whole thing off, rechecks every so often so "line drop" is catered for)

BTW, simply powering down the PC that has the frog on it won't help a bit if the line gets zapped by lightning. Most likely the frog will pass-through the killer voltage straight to your mb and fritz the entire machine. Better to unplug the lead from the socket. It's the same principle as unplugging the aerial to the TV.

I've been Using BT Openworld for about 5 months now and they have been a very good ISP, I've had no reason to moan.

Your Modem and 2 filters should turn up about 2-3 days before the activation date, when it does try connecting everything up. Sometimes BT activate your line before the date so you can get a couple of days surfing in for free ;)

No, here in Cornwall virtually every single line is from pilons.

I'm not getting a Frogb>' modem, LO:D:D - I'm gettting the 'BT Voyager USB modem' that BT provides for ADS:yes:s: ....

lol! The Voyager USB modem is knicknamed 'The Frog' don't know wh:s:s Its nice really, it can sit on its side like the PS2.

While I'm on the subject. Anyone got the drivers by themselves for the modem? The ones which are provided install BT help and some other rubbish as well which isnt needed. The ones on the BT site are the same.

Tip Radish - when you install the package (drivers etc) you might notice you get this stuppid icon in the sys tray (2 arrows) its the 'connection wizard' or something stupid like that BT like to give you.

Go to 'msconfig' and untick dslagent and gsicon and remhelp

You dont need them... they are just stuff to do with connecting... but Windows has a dialer

Up to you really... try it for a bit first though, just in case of problems and stuff, then do it. I have had no prob;);)

Broadband is a marketing term for monkeys.

BTW if the c*ck who keeps nicking 'jon' on ircnet is reading this, I hope you've got a lot of bandwidth, you're gonna need it..
