Sony: Watch our rivals go next-gen first

Recommended Posts

Sony came out with the PS3 a year later, and they are doing very well. I don't see any reason for them to release a console sooner than they are ready to.

You make some sense.

PS3 is only what 3.75 years of age?

IF PS3 is a 10 year console, which averages to 9 years to the next machine; we won't be seeing a PS4 till 2014-2015

Personally i think Sony won't make e first move not because of the PS3's power, but because they just recently started making money on it.

If they came out with another console, they would have to add the loss of funds from the R&D / Manufqcture of that machine to what they have already lost on the PS3

That means $150 PS3s for everybody in 2 years

 But I agree that new console anytime soon would be bit premature.

It's my understanding that (according to Sony) that the PS3 is selling better than the PS2 did. And besides losing sales to the 360 in 2010, all previous years, the PS3 has been outselling the 360.

I think that means they are doing pretty good.

There's little reason for sony to release another hardware platform .?

Performance wise , it's still being squeezed . And as for the future , you can't come with drastic revisions (new ppu , memory) due to implications regarding development .

Improving the PSN , touting it and maybe improving upon the dev tools would make the ps3 the best all-around console for at least another 2 years .?

Is there a chance games will look better w/ time than the 360?

No. It has a LIFE SPAN of 10 years, not every ten years they will release a new PS.

The PS3 also came out in Nov. 06, so it's 4 years so far. They should/will release a new PS3 in 2012/2013.

I don't want to troll here but it honestly sounds like Sony is pulling a "We want to watch the competition this time around so we know what to copy and put in our system."

Though in all seriousness.. I think everyone, except for Nintendo will play it safe this next round.

The only thing that Nintendo needs to do to get it's feet back wet in the water is : Appeal to ALL GAMERS, not casual.. and get a better system.

I personally will wait out 5 years for the new consoles to be taken fully advantage of.

Bugs get ironed out

Console Price drops

Some games might get price drops

Firmware updates

A better outlook on what kind of machine and future it'll have in store for the consumer

feels good man.

yeah I agree. Whatever Sony and Microsoft do, they have already laid the groundwork for most of their next system already. The online is their as well as the media features of both systems. Whatever next system they come out with won't be hugely radical, just a more powerful system NES to SNES type of transistion. Obviously motion control will be out of the box, but I don't think either company will completely giveup on the classic controller like Nintendo has. Microsoft would also be stupid to not include a blu-ray in their next system.

Nintendo does have the most to do and honestly lose with their next system. Yes they have destroyed the numbers this generation and taken the largest share of the casual game market. The trick for Nintendo is to try to get that very same casual audience to buy an upgraded HD system along with the HD games that come with it, as well as a possible better online network. Nintendo has been so successful in convincing a segment of the customer base they don't need HD and all that silly internet, movie playback type stuff that they will have to undo those very arguments if they hope their next system will be a success. Nintendo needs the casual market to survive and if those people stay content with their Wii then they might have some problems.

The reason I say no prototype until 2012 is simply because when you think about it, apart from say a new exterior design, a better more powerful DX11 videocard, and obviously more RAM and 1/2TB HD, what else can they add?

The PS3 Slim is the creme of the crop hardware wise atm. I really can't see anything that would warrant a new machine right now.

They sure as **** won't be paying MS to have a DX11 / 12 card.

Sony's never been to market first in any gen.

Wii2 will be the first, the sales are way lower than they used to be due to the price drops on 360/ps3 consoles that have happened over the past 1yr. We can all see how crap the graphics are on the wii, they will be wanting to address that and try and entice enthusiast gamers rather than kids and ppl who fall for gimmicks like the wii controller. I'm sure it would probably only equal the ps3 in terms of spec as they will be wanting to sell them pretty cheap and in large volume like they did with the current wii. Don't expect a console that will kill the ps3/360, i'm certainly not, but an console of equal power would be nice.

They never said they don't need it. With HD, when the Wii came out, HDTV market penetration was really low, so bringing out an HD console and upping costs would be detrimental to keeping the price low, without adding too much benefit to the majority of consumers (at the time). As for Internet, I don't think Nintendo has ever said they don't need the Internet on the Wii - the fact that the VC and WiiWare business models give them a lot of extra revenue attests to this. They even started a campaign to give people free NES games in exchange for helping their friends get their Wii online. As for movie playback, well, I don't think they've actively convinced the customer base it's not necessary, they just kind of side-stepped the whole issue entirely. Plus, I don't think that's really what they were going for for the Wii and so it might seem like a superfluous "+1 me too" feature. Unsure if the Wii 2 will have decent movie playback or not.

Sales are lower then they used to be, granted, but they're still on top of NPD and I'm fairly certain 360/PS3 Like for Like sales are down too. Also, I don't think Nintendo will be the first. Nintendo are very well aware of Sega's demise - if they are first then I doubt the time between the XBOX 3 and PS4 will be large.

To be honest, I don't think any of the big 3 will announce a Next Gen console until 2012. This current generation is still going strong.

Especially the Wii. I don't think Nintendo would do it until 2014 maybe. Especially since the Wii "fits" them.

The kind of crap they're pushing, (Shovelware by the loads, very few good titles) and Nintendos stance on Graphics/hardware as well makes me believe they won't bother for a long time.

I am quite happy w/ the Xbox 360 and PS3... Unless Nintendo something about the Wii's graphics soon, I think they'll start losing market share especially because the Xbox and PS3 are getting motion controls/wand type controls. Yes the Wiimote's cool factor made it a sweet thing to own and play on when it came out but as their competitors gain those capabilities and can do it with HD resolution.. the Wii is not so appealing anymore.
