Cupcakes
To me a warning is a serious thing. Each level is a step closer to being banned. It just sucks the mods bend the rules for some and not all. I doubt the mods "bend the rules" at all. Neowin is ~very~ active so unless the post has been reported, I'd say that a lot of times some stuff may slip under the radar for a few days until they come across it. Then again I don't know the averages for how many reports mods get a day so :p To me a warning is a serious thing. Each level is a step closer to being banned. It just sucks the mods bend the rules for some and not all. Yeah thats why other members do it all the time and not get punished :p If you read a post that you know is not suitable to be public by all means use the report button on it! But ensure that you are just not reporting it because you disagree. Ensure that the post is going against the rules that have been put in place. I would say it's not that they don't get punished but they just slip by without anyone else reporting it and/or a mod just having missed the post altogether. It happens. Solid Knight
So in the political section and the news section these things are not going to be implemented. Those forums are too ripe for abuse to have any kind of rating system. Too many people will get mad at somebody over their position on controversial subjects. Growled Member Posted July 10, 2010 Member Share Posted July 10, 2010 Maybe those forums have different ideas than us. I'm sure they do but every forum that has a rep system surely has run into abuse of the system at some point. I doubt if our problems are that unique. petrossa
Exactly - we'll see how it works out. I have this sense of foreboding. Shivers down my spine. I better make a screenshot of my rep points, i see the clouds hanging. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/919016-rep-changes/page/10/#findComment-592886234 Share on other sites
Solid Knight
Those who get mad shouldn't take part in the forums. If they do, so be it they will be banned soon enough :p. It's impossible to build a system that knows why a person gave a rating and people who get mad may have enough restraint to avoid doing anything that gets them modded. With a rating system you can stick it to the user without violating any of the rules. On another subject; what's the purpose of a rating system if you don't know why a person has the rating they have? Was it for trolling? For being a dick? For making useless posts? Because several people got mad at him over some issue? What specific things did this person do to deserve their rating? That's the most valuable information. General purpose rating systems are just too difficult to fairly implement but if you want to attempt it then you should look into a system more complicated than simple addition and subtraction of some number. Perhaps there should be a minimum number of like-minded votes before any vote takes affect. Perhaps the system should diminish the weight of an individual's vote if the bulk of their votes are too negative or too positive towards a given user. backdrifter
I think the best solution that someone came up with in this thread was to put the voting system only on the technical/on-topic parts of the forum. Unlike the other parts, reps have been used quite rationally over there. Darth Laidher
I hear this a lot, yet it never makes sense to me. How do you know who we warn and don't warn? Because half of the forum would be banned. And I was told if I seen any pictures to report it :p. But i refuse to report something so trivial. Darth Laidher
if you refuse to report, then you really cant complain about people not getting in trouble for the stuff, right? Cupcakes
meh then I guess they should go through every post that has a baby crying or fail picture and give them a warning, they wont though. Do you see how busy Neowin is? This thread alone has 243 Replies right now. Staff will not always be able to see everything posted every damn day. This is why there's a report feature. If you see a post that is not adhering to the community rules, report it! It's honestly that easy. Don't sit here and say "meh [...]give them a warning, they won't though" if you're not going to put forth any effort to help the staff. Not only that but a "warning" has nothing to do with it. You don't see any of this at all. So how do you know when staff gives a warning and when it doesn't? Oh yeah, that's right.. you don't. Just report a post that isn't adhering to the community rules and let the staff do their own job. DaveLegg Developer Posted July 10, 2010 Developer Share Posted July 10, 2010 Meh then I guess they should go through every post that has a baby crying or fail picture and give them a warning, they wont though. How do you know so much about what moderation staff will/won't do, you've been here 20 days, while you have had contact with moderators, you can't learn enough about our system in 20 days to know fully how we operate and make those assumptions. Don't kid yourself the mods get around. The mods are almost in every thread I post in. Last month there were almost 5 thousand topics created, you don't expect us to read them all do you? +Frank B. Subscriber² Posted July 10, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted July 10, 2010 Don't kid yourself the mods get around. The mods are almost in every thread I post in. You're grossly underestimating the size of this forum. The staff can't possibly see all posts immediately. The more offensive/trolling/flamebaiting/spamming posts you report, the more you help the staff keep the place in order. Techno_Funky
Finally someone at the top realised how useless the system is and was, it was bound to fail as a quality assessment tool from day one. +1 it was unnecessary trouble anyways. BoredBozirini
If you have an issue with a moderation action taken against you, please take it up with the moderator in question, or a supervisor. Public discussion of moderation is not permitted. If only. Most times mods just ignore when the user is right when an infraction was unjust.
