To me a warning is a serious thing. Each level is a step closer to being banned. It just sucks the mods bend the rules for some and not all.

I doubt the mods "bend the rules" at all. Neowin is ~very~ active so unless the post has been reported, I'd say that a lot of times some stuff may slip under the radar for a few days until they come across it.

Then again I don't know the averages for how many reports mods get a day so :p

Yeah thats why other members do it all the time and not get punished :p

If you read a post that you know is not suitable to be public by all means use the report button on it! But ensure that you are just not reporting it because you disagree. Ensure that the post is going against the rules that have been put in place.

I would say it's not that they don't get punished but they just slip by without anyone else reporting it and/or a mod just having missed the post altogether. It happens.

Those forums are too ripe for abuse to have any kind of rating system. Too many people will get mad at somebody over their position on controversial subjects.

Those who get mad shouldn't take part in the forums. If they do, so be it they will be banned soon enough :p.

It's impossible to build a system that knows why a person gave a rating and people who get mad may have enough restraint to avoid doing anything that gets them modded. With a rating system you can stick it to the user without violating any of the rules.

On another subject; what's the purpose of a rating system if you don't know why a person has the rating they have? Was it for trolling? For being a dick? For making useless posts? Because several people got mad at him over some issue? What specific things did this person do to deserve their rating? That's the most valuable information.

General purpose rating systems are just too difficult to fairly implement but if you want to attempt it then you should look into a system more complicated than simple addition and subtraction of some number. Perhaps there should be a minimum number of like-minded votes before any vote takes affect. Perhaps the system should diminish the weight of an individual's vote if the bulk of their votes are too negative or too positive towards a given user.

DICK TROLL

NOOB

meh then I guess they should go through every post that has a baby crying or fail picture and give them a warning, they wont though.

Do you see how busy Neowin is? This thread alone has 243 Replies right now. Staff will not always be able to see everything posted every damn day. This is why there's a report feature. If you see a post that is not adhering to the community rules, report it! It's honestly that easy.

Don't sit here and say "meh [...]give them a warning, they won't though" if you're not going to put forth any effort to help the staff. Not only that but a "warning" has nothing to do with it. You don't see any of this at all. So how do you know when staff gives a warning and when it doesn't? Oh yeah, that's right.. you don't.

Just report a post that isn't adhering to the community rules and let the staff do their own job.

Don't kid yourself the mods get around. The mods are almost in every thread I post in.

How do you know so much about what moderation staff will/won't do, you've been here 20 days, while you have had contact with moderators, you can't learn enough about our system in 20 days to know fully how we operate and make those assumptions.

Last month there were almost 5 thousand topics created, you don't expect us to read them all do you? Because I can assure you, we don't.

You're grossly underestimating the size of this forum. The staff can't possibly see all posts immediately. The more offensive/trolling/flamebaiting/spamming posts you report, the more you help the staff keep the place in order.

He might be a long long time forum reader - like me :shiftyninja:

Im not going to go any further into this because I don't want to push my luck, and if I went into this any further I'd continue to delve deeper into why I think i was wrongly warned.

I knew about these forums for years before I became a member.

If you have an issue with a moderation action taken against you, please take it up with the moderator in question, or a supervisor. Public discussion of moderation is not permitted.

If only. Most times mods just ignore when the user is right when an infraction was unjust.
