[UK] PS3 third party repair service?

Recommended Posts

Hey all...I've got a new ps3 but want to repair my old 60GB launch unit.

It stopped reading discs, and then when I opened it up to confirm the laser I needed to order, I managed to screw something else up so that it no longer accepts/ejects discs properly. I can't fix it so I'm better off getting a third party to sort it out, especially if they give me a warranty period.

Can anyone recommend a service they may have used? There are quite a few around it seems...so would be good if anyone has had any experience with one.

Do you know exactly what you've damaged?

I'd be willing to take a look at it for you. No fix no fee, 90 day warranty on any work carried out.

Also, I highly recommend that you do not buy a cheap replacement blu-ray laser as they can literally last a matter of hours.

I don't really :( However, I'm guessing you know how the disc tray looks from the inside, so I'll try to describe it what it might be:

At the very front, where the disc goes in, there are two plastic bits (not the circular ones, the odd shaped, almost diamond like ones) on either side that move, symmetrically, when a disc is inserted. One of those came off, and I managed to get it back on and hold it in place with that very, very thin bit of wire. I don't know if it's actually holding once I've put everything back together though, and I don't know if this is what's causing the disc not to go in properly and then not to eject - but it's the only thing that looks damaged/out of place.

To clarify, when I insert a disc, the drive takes it in, but it's followed by a long whirring sound as if the disc isn't sitting in the right place. And then when I try to eject, it makes the same sound and nothing happens.

In addition, the laser doesn't work anyway (at least, I presume that's the issue if the PS3 won't read any discs).

I was intending to buy the KES-400A...dyou mean that would be a cheap replacement laser?

Thanks for your offer. Dyou think what I've described is something that would be worth you looking at? And what type of laser would you use...?

Ah nevermind, sorry if I wasted your time but I decided just to pay Sony £131 for the refurb 60GB.

Almost all the repair places (including yourself lol) offer 90 days warranty, same as Sony. And after VAT most charge almost £100 for laser-related issues. So just thought I'd spend the extra £30 for peace of mind because the refurbs go thru entire quality control rather than only the specific problem being looked at (in theory anyways). Plus this includes a guy coming to my door in two days time and swapping over the PS3s, so no delivery costs (and at 5kg, it's pretty expensive to send anywhere).

Not such a bad price after weighing up the alternatives.

Edit: they also offered me a 160GB phat but I wanted the backwards compatibility, extra USB ports and memory card slots over the hard drive.

Yeah, with the price of a quality laser plus labour, you're looking at around ?100 :(

Still thinking about selling my own launch PS3 with a 250GB drive actually.

lol, just to update this thread...i got the refurb unit yesterday. It's so sexy! (old unit had a couple of scratches and came out wounded after opening it up a couple of times)

definitely notice how loud the fans are now that I've got a slim to compare it to

I'm still thinking about going with the Slim given the noise reduction. Mine sounds pretty loud, thinking I should be able to get about ?150 for it at a push if I throw in a few lesser games.

If you don't care about backwards compatibility, it's definitely definitely worth it. The slim looks so good when you actually see it too. And it's so quiet I often forget it's on (the green led to show it's on is now much smaller and not as prominent).

Yeah I'm very tempted to trade in my phat 40GB for a slim, my original ps3 wasn't too loud, but then it YLOD and the refurbed one I got given sounds like a jet engine!
