PS3 vs XBOX360

Recommended Posts

I just bought a PS3 and I do feel I made the best purchase, but I'll be honest I havent owned a console since the PS; I was wondering if I could get a breakdown of specs, online services, games and any other factors that separate these consoles from each other. Basically I want to feel I made the right decision lol. Thanks

When it comes to these 2 systems, if you are happy with your decision, then you made the right choice. I personally love my PS3 and have no desire at all to get an X-box. The games are just as good as the ones of the same title on the X-box. Each system has its own exclusives, which IMO should be the deciding factor on which to get. Im not sure of the exlusive's of the X-Box other than Halo, but with the PS3 you get God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, Little Big Planet and Demon's Souls, amongst others. Add in the fact that you get Blu-ray and the ability to stream music and videos from your computer, it easily becomes a staple of a home entertainment system. I for one have never once regretted getting the PS3 instead of the X-box. But it is really up to each individual to what makes the system the best for them.

^ I agree with this statement

I had owned a Xbox(since Q4 of 07) up until 3 weeks ago when it burned out. I'm now considering a PS3 because the games on Xbox weren't really all that appealing to me besides Halo, Gears of War and Bayonetta (which is preferred to play on the 360 due to Quality Control)

Now I'm getting into Blu Ray and the PS3 is looking mighty attractive in White. Free Multiplayer is always a welcomed option to boot with as well.

So lemme ask this. If the XBOX is the most popular console and its the easiest to develop on does that mean that most games are dveloped on the xbox then ported to the PS3. If so that doesent really take advantage of the PS3's cell processor, is that correct? Also that would mean that developers couldent develop a title on the PS3 then port it over to the XBOX360 or is that what they did with FFXIII?

Developers take the easy way out since MS developed a platform they could port from PC to Xbox since developers are using Direct X. Sony uses Open GL which is a different animal to begin with but developers want to reap the rewards sooner so they don't put the time to optimize for the PS3 (note not all developers are guilty of this)

Most 3rd party titles have consistent quality with the exceptions of a few. I wouldn't worry about it.

If you're curious about the cell processor that's perfectly fine but I wouldn't worry about the horsepower per say, Sony is still developing tools to squeeze allot more juice from the PS3, it's only a matter of time before you'll see games start looking better.

Games now already look just as good IMO, and Sony has some nice titles that really make it worthwhile for owing a PS3.

You are correct. They cannot make a game for the PS3 and port it to a XBOX. Well they can, but they would be 'dumbing down' the game in question for it to run properly on each console. This happened with Grand Theft Auto 4 actually. The game was built on the XBOX and then ported to the PS3, which ended up in drastic loss of detail (the 640p instead of 720p). On games that are 'exclusively for PlayStation' lie God of War, Uncharted (especially Uncharted 2) you will be see the difference in the games. Graphics and game-play are simply amazing in Uncharted 2, and I doubt that XBOX could pull off a game of that magnitude because 90% of what you see is done in real time using the cell processor.

So there you have it.

When it comes down to it, the best way to decide if your PS3 is to just use it, and see for yourself.

Put in a game, play it. Put in a Blu-Ray, play it. Go on the PSN, look around.

If they don't make you say 'this is a good buy' - I really don't know what will.

You made a great choice. Now, when you have some extra funds, buy you an Xbox 360 as well so you can experience the fun of both.

indeed. Get both. There is no 'better' console.

I've had a Playstation 3, Wii & Xbox 360. My personal favourite is my Playstation 3 although i do miss my Xbox 360 and its extremely comfortable controller. In terms of which offers best, there is little to choose between them both when you get down to gaming.

PS3 was the best purchase I have every made for a console, to be honest I had rented a 360 and it got RROD the second I booted it. I have never thought of getting a Microsoft console since. PS3 is the greatest and most powerful console on the market plus free online makes me smile. With an arsenal of great exclusives it makes a system worth having.

*Photo and Video Editing

*Web browser

*PS Home

*PSN and Video Store

Its a system that's in it for the long run.

Owning both I enjoy to use my 360 more just because its live service is just more engaging, its hard to explain

also I love the xbox 360 controller much more than PS3 for fps however remember its all down to personal preference even

though I reckon you'd be just as happy with a 360

I own a PS3 so i'm going with the PS3.I bought the PS3 simply because I didn't want to have to pay a fee to play online, that plus at the time the 360's didn't have wifi built in to them.Plus the Blu-ray drive pretty much sealed the deal for me.

The games are excellent there has been a few bad ones but thats because the dev's didn't do a good job with them not the PS3's fault.Over all i'm happy with the game selection, the only main flaw i see with the PS3 games is the jaggies but I can live with that.

you made a good choice... there are many exclusive games and here are the missed ones.

Uncharted 2, Heavy rain, Mod Nation Racer..

free online play unlike xbox live is a plus

bluray is a plus...

gone are the days when people use to complain about the game collection in ps3...

now ps3 has a lot of games.

I agree the collection of games as grown enormously thats why owning both is always a great idea but may not be affordable

Once again choose what you like best! Its all down to opinion

Also does anyone else get reall crappy framerate on some PS3 games like red dead lags on my ps3 however on my 360 is perfect same as assasins creed and cod

Weiird =/

I have both and i prefer my 360, nothing beats it's controller :)

Although if you have a 1080p TV you will love the XMB as it is native 1080p, not like the Xbox's dashboard.

(Got my PS3 today BTW.)

for me it's xbox 360: dead rising, dead or alive 4, infinite undiscovery, blue dragon, lost odyssey, fable 2, gears of war, condemned, ninja gaiden, media payer capabilities, 1080p video streaming with zune marketplace, facebook for my girlfriend and cost me 199$ CAD to buy the console with 20gb hdd which is enough considering I now use a 16gb usb key to load my profile and downloads

I was going to buy a PS3 also but 299$ with ps2 emulation removed (always wanted to play old ps2 games like FF10 on a modern console with a wifi controller on hdmi, no enough component entries on my aqos tv to plug my old ps2) is not interesting to me, ps3 games are not appealing to me apart from god of war 3 and the ones that are, are also on xbox

for handheld it's DS: Final Fantasy 3 and 4, Dragon Quest 4-5-6 and 9, whats can I say I love JRPGs, also have a psp i use to play emulators (GBA, SNES, etc...) but haven't really found any good PSP games yet...

I am a Microsoft kool-aide drinker. Further on, I just dont like the PS controller, look or feel. But it does have some good games, not enough to buy one though.

Only reason I would have bought one was that blu-ray players were the same price and the PS3 did a lot more.

Wow, thanks for all the input & thank you for not turning this into a flame war. I just wanted to see the low down on both since it has been a very long time since I had a console. Seriously, what does it for me is the wireless streaming of my blu-ray library of movies straight to my 46" 1080p samsung TV in the living room.

Yeah, media streaming is great. I have both too and I like both of them, just need to get a more recent PS3 game!

I have both systems, but aside from what people already added in this thread, I would have to say that if you're interested (or even mildly interested) in online play, I'd say Xbox offers a better service...and I usually only play my ps3 for exclusives. Before I got my xbox I wasn't interested in online play at all and used to be a mostly RPG player, but it's almost impossible for me now to think about gaming on a console without some kind of good online service. And PSN doesn't really cut it. For example, at any time of the day, whether it be 9AM or 4AM, my friend list on my Xbox usually has a minimum of 5 friends. It's usually about 10-15, and the accessibility to join them in a party and hop online in the same game together is very quick and easy. PSN however leaves a little more to be desired, and my friend list is constantly inactive and most of the time when I play games online hardly anyone uses a microphone. I don't know if other people share the same frustrations, or if this is just my own personal experience.

I have had the same experience. For whatever reason, XBL seems to have a more "connected" or community natural feel to it. It's probably just a mind thing.

BTW, this topic is probably better to be handled in the general gaming forum.

I was thinking the exact same thing before wanting to purchase the PS3, but then I remembered I don't have any friends and the people who are on LIVE use allot of profanity when they speaking on the mic (could be the same on PSN but not likely since not allot of people own that bluetooth headset)

So that kind of desire puts me off thinking about it.

I have all three consoles. As far as the PS3 and Xbox 360 are concerned, I think in the end of the day hardware wise they are more or less equal. People will argue the PS3 has a more powerful CPU in that of the cell and others argue the Xbox has a superior graphics solution but I think when a game is ported between the two well it accounts for nill anyway. It all balances out more or less. You get the odd shoddy port that is worse on one console but that can go either way. Other potentially overlooked difference hardware wise is the controller but thats down to personal preference. I prefer the Xbox but debate on that seems split 50/50.

Big things in favor of the PS3 (besides its exclusives) would be Blu Ray and PSN being free. Personally I don't mind paying for Live and got a paid PSN+ account anyway but for some its a big deal. I certainly use my PS3 to play DVD's and Blu Rays, something I can't say for my Xbox.

Ultimatly the biggest difference is the exclusives. Little Big Planet, GT, God of War vs Halo, Mass Effect, Fable, Gears of War ect. If you have a strong preference to one batch then thats likely the system for you. If you are split or care more about multiplatform games (COD ect) then either system will do. The exception is if you have friends that all have one system over the other in which case I'd get that purely for the online play factor that provides.

Personally I prefer my 360, I think it gives a better overall experience and is somewhat better focused than the PS3 but both are great systems and if you enjoy the PS3 then you arguably made the right choice.
