Yes they do look seach for them if you like, Just so you know they are both 24 bit (CD 16 bit) and upport surround sound, 5 channles give or take, (CD just 2 channels) DVD-A will play in pretty much any DVD player and SACD will play in any CD player and any DVD player but if it doent upport SACD it will play like a normal CD, in short SACD is backwards compatable and will play in any ordinary CD player.

DVD-A has sorround sound while SACD does the CD player has to support it while DVD-A in home theaters most DVD support it and recievers.

I didn't even know I owned a HDCD until I put my City Of Angels soundtrack in a computer at work which started WMP9 it started showing this little icon on the bottom by the time slider clicked it, and was surprised as I didn't even know it existed until that moment.

if this scd or whatever you called it played in a cd player and it is supposed to go up against a dvd...Where is the video gunna come form unless of course its just for music or soemtihng, in that case id ont think either wil won because they will be a good bit more expensive than cd's and we all know how much everyone loves buying cd's.

SACD requires a SACD player, some higher end DVD players have SACD support. DVD-A is just that, DVD-Audio, very rarely does it have video, if it does it's an extremely small amount. So it's Audio vs Audio.

SACD is not posed to go against the DVD. It is a super audio CD, my Sony DVD system supports it. It is a challenge, as are the others, to the CD format. No video just audio.

I have played the SACD demo that came with the system - it is really fantastic to hear the sound all around in 5.1. So I rush back to Best Buy ans say "where is the SACD section?". I am directed to a tiny rack in the back corner of the store. Basically only a few Sony artist releases, all are a old, and a lot of classical choices.

i think it will be nitch thing, only audiopiles will get it, as it will cost more than a normal cd, and most people bitch about the price of those. but if the whole industry went this way...increased piracy all around.

I think the most logical step isn't either of these because they both require additional hardware, but why can't they simply use the regular DVD format and just allocate all the space to audio? That way you've got kick ass, high quality 5.1 albums and millions of people have regular DVD players.

but doesn't the music have to be recorded in 5.1 for it to make any difference? i mean i can't see the music of the 50's sounding any better in 5.1 than in stereo cause thats what it was made it. and as far i know not many artists record their stuff now in 5.1 except maybe reznor.

please correct me if i am wrong , i'm not a sound guru.

eevoo correct

only newly recorded music will benefit and alot of bands will not have the equipement available to them to record in 5.1

its a good idea tho

maybe just using DVD's would be best, is a DVD-A a whole new format or is it just a normal dvd with only the audio on it?

a DVD with say a still image of say the track listing would be good, that way you can see what your listening to and listen in 5.1 :) (Y)

DVD-A is a new format, you need new hardware just like SACD. Might as well take advantage of the millions of DVD players out there if you ask me. I've listened to a few DVD's of concerts and the 5.1 sound on that was awesome, I can't for the life of me remember who it was though :D

DVDs will replace CDs all together. CDs are small, don't have as many features, and more and more people are buying DVD players or DVD drives.

When you consider how just 5 years ago, places like HMV and Virgin stocked 6 DVD's :| It's come a long way in such a short space of time, take advantage of it.

Yeah, this should be as big of a hit as quadrophonic sound was.

Basically, unless someone is going to actually record in 5.1 sound, these won't be any better than a normal CD split to all six channels. Just releasing a DVD without any video would be as good as these, or even something to watch while the music is on.

Also, there is no advantage to moving to the DVD format since no one will use them in their cars, or with portable players, or anywhere except on a set-top DVD player. So, in theory, SACD should win, but no one will use it anyway, unless Sony just starts making their players SACD compatible.

Quite a few manufacturers are making DVD players which have both DVD-A and SACD decoders inside. What I really want is pre/pro's and receivers with DVD-A decoders built into them... so far the decoders are only in the source machines (which usually suck), once they move them into the receivers, a lot more quality can be had...

Oh, and if I had to guess, DVD-A will win, believe me.

Im supprised to see SACD (MY fav) Loosing this It is already Wining the war , Ithas twice the amount of titles DVD-A has already. Look at Dark Side of the Moon for Example that one killer album and you can only buy this on SACD now, I was thinking of buying it!!!! Another thing SACD's backward compatibulity wont just help companies to faze it in without people noticeing and people without SACD players, but if you have an SACD player in your front room but not in your Bedroom, you can still play it in your bed room! Thats just sweet!

So an sacd will play in normal cd players right? Can you also record on them in a normal cd burner? And are there or will there be sacd-r and sacd-rw?
