Top 10 Milestones in Gaming

Recommended Posts

Quite console-centric but generally holds up. A more PC centric list would also contain:

Mods and community content

Mouselook (Keyboard + Mouse)

GUI interface instead of text

Voice communication

'Massive' multiplayer

Digital Downloads and no media requirements

Online communities/Clans (HEAT/MSZone/WON)

High resolutions

Force feedback

XBL should only be credited with tracking/achievements.

i totally agree here. alot of things that were in the back of my mind while watching this vid but didn't really register.

It's not irrelevant because neither mice nor optical media was created for the purpose of gaming. The industry simply followed other media in that direction. Whereas services like Xbox Live was the reason competitors created Steam, PSN and Wii online.

It's like trying to give credit to the PC gaming scene for the modem and online gaming.

Same goes for a lot of the things Dashel mentions in his list. PC gaming gave birth to GUI's now?

lol what?

optical media was huge in pc gaminging when it first came out. i used floppies for apps other than games for years after i got cd rom drive. the mouse, well it wasn't reall well utilized till the late 90s in games but it was well before the analog sticks of the consoles of that era.

and the pc gaming platform fully gets credit for the modern and online gaming scene. it's what console has wanted to be for the past decadde and only come close to in a small way in the past few years, despite the fall of pc gaming. everything that the cosnole gaming scene is today the pc gaming scene was there for years before and is still years ahead.

when you can finish a round of your favourite game and alt tab to the forum check your stats chat with the guy in your game and share some fraps vids of your game on the same platform let me know.

steam came out to support hl2...

xbl didn't take off until after the 360.

steam was a success from hl2 forward. maybe just due to hl2 requiring it but nonetheless.

lolwut? Halo 2 says hi

halo 2 was a xbox OG game? news to me i played it on 360.

Do some research then. Xbox live was released to the public on November 15th, 2002 to celebrate the one year anniversary of the xbox. It was available to beta testers all througout the summer and leading up to its release. Again Halo 2 says hi. Not only halo 2, but Unreal Championship, Rainbow six, Mechassault, Splinter Cell Chaos theory, Burnout, Call of Duty, Dead or Alive, Medal of Honor, Moto GP, Project Gotham, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, etc. All those franchises had live enabled games with big followings. The orginal xbox live had millions of subscribers by the end of its time.

But I will give you that the xbox 360 and its ever expanding social networking and entertainment features have helped the live service become a massive 23 million and counting live users. Xbox live has been growing since its inception just like steam. The 360 features have helped immensely to increase its popularity even faster.

While I agree with most of comments here.

In regards to Steam Vs XBL.

Steam was brought out as a Content Delivery system, a way to get games and patches out.

XBL was created as a multiplayer/community centric system (match making, friends list, patching, and limited DLC via in game).

Steam has only begun to have more community features, but steam is not the platform for matchmaking/servers for its games, it helps join games etc.

It is only recent XBL is now a media, and game delivery system (since xbox 360 in 2005 I guess), probably due to Steam being a big success on that side.

And now Steam adding community features more and more due to XBL being a success in that respect.

Thats what I think anyway, feel free to pick holes, bitch etc...

XBL done all the social elements and what not first and better than Steam, however Steam will be the future if MS continue to charge for everything.

PSN/XBL are both big enough content delivery platforms like Steam now that I don't think there's much time left in charging to play online.

I have no idea what extent Steam is coming to PSN when Gabe Newell babbled on about it at E3/Portal 2 unveil, but part of me hopes it's more significant than something simple, I love what Steam has become.

Disagree with both.

The Social elements are more fleshed out than Live. Hell they haven't even got groups yet. I don't know if you can call the Live and PSN delivery platforms when they don't even deliver new retail games. They deliver arcade games and old retail games at extortionate prices. But if I wish to I could put my card details in to Steam and pre order/buy all the latest games AND pick up a few arcade games.

Live and PSN have a long way to go before they can be considered on par with Steam.

I meant it in the sense of they make enough revenue from what they have as content delivery platforms the old excuse of "we need to pay to support the servers" doesn't really run any more when considering paying to play your games online.

Both also sell/allow you to rent videos, which will be popular and a good cash generator outside of gaming.

Oh in that case then yeah. If they built up the publisher deals like Steam has they would be rolling in the cash.

Sorry Monkey, PC GAMERS were the first to adopt all the technologies you dismiss. It doesn't matter 'why' said technology was invented, but how it changed gaming and when it was used first. Since the PC is THE testbed for most new technologies, we obviously saw them years, if not decades, before. I have never, ever, upgraded my computer for anything OTHER than gaming. WE push the general gaming industry forward, not consoles. (With the obvious exception of Nintendo). Steam was a natural progression of other technologies that already existed. Little respect to your forefathers eh?

As far as my list, moving from text to mouse input was huge leap for adventure gaming. I'm old enough to have played the original PCjr KQI with original graphics and text only input. KQV was simply a tour de force that introduced the new UI and it was a milestone. (Along with VGA and CDROM). Games came on CD long before general application vendors got on board as games once again were pushing the envelope.

Whats next, we can't claim decades of enjoying a local HDD? Silly noobs.

I don't mean to be arrogant about it, but its just as arrogant to pretend that many of these technologies that debuted on the PC weren't meaningful because they are multifunction devices.
