Speed=ping?

Recommended Posts

Does the speed effect ping? Because I have a 256k DSL connection and thinking of upgrading to 1.5mb, will it lower my ping? On 256k i'm getting 65 ping the lowest.

it can, but on properly setup dsl it should not.

regular windows ping is 32bytes. how much does it take to transfer 32bytes on 256kbit dsl vs 1.5mbit dsl? :)

if you ALWAYS get 65ms as your lowest ping to anyway, even your gateway, find out if you are in "interleave" mode. if so, ask your isp to switch you to "fast path" mode.

and generally call up your isp and talk to them to get better ping time. sometimes all they have to do is reprovision your line...10min task.

The ping is response time through the network... it can have an effect on your speed. If all the routers it travels through are slow then your connection will generally be slower...

Think of it like this...

256 = Small pipe. When running routine pings, you should get low pings (if like MxxCon said, it's properly setup). BUT, if you start to fill that pipe (ie. dl more, ul more, etc), then your pings will suffer.

If you upgrade, that just gives you a bigger pipe to use. For instance, I wouldn't be able to run my private FTP AND play CS with my 768/128 DSL. I would have to cap my FTP at 7Kb\s UL so I could get decent pings.

Now that I'm in my new apt and have access to the T1, I can leave my server uncapped and be able to play CS and still get low pings.

First off, your RWIN is too high.

Change your MTU to 1492.

Change your RWIN to 8712 (1492-40=1452 {your MSS} MSSx6 {better to make it an even multiple}=8712).

Everything else looks good. Try my sugested settings and run another test and post back here. :)

heh i'd die for your pings. I use PPOA so i don't think i can change my mtu to 1492. I also have 256k up 256k down

Of course you can!

There's a utility on their site called DrTCP. Use it.

And since you are using a PPPox service, your MTU would be BEST set at 1492 or even 1464 (mine was at 1464 for a while when I had Ameritech DSL, gave a noticable improvement in pings and sustained speeds).

But run another test after you do those and report back here.

Here are the pings they skyrocketed up there

Give it a second here. :) It's a matter of testing and finding out what exactly fits your setup.

First thing I notice right off the bat is that your RWIN isn't a multiple of your MSS.

Try a 1492 MTU and an RWIN of 14520.

In DRTCP:

  • Windows Scaling = off
  • Time Stamping = off
  • Selective Acks = On
  • Path MTU = YES/ON
  • Black Hole = Off/No
  • MaxMTU = 1492
  • Receive Window = 14520

Then reboot and retest.

That is weird. I am honestly surprised your pings have gone UP after applying these tweaks.

Well, let's try two diff RWIN values:

63360

31680

Both are even multiples of your current MTU.

Maybe one of those will be closer to your line's "sweet spot".

I actually got a faster speed transfer rate

but still no luck

I called and complained MSN is garbage I have to hop like 15 and get the scraps down the barrel when the ones on top have like 40 ping then all the sudden i get pings around the 100s

don't tell them anything about games.

say it's remote control or teleconferencing or something like that..

when you complain about games they think you are some kid and ignore you.

lol remote control and teleconferencing. I doubt they're going to do anything about it anyways because my telco is Qwest and msn can't do anything about it and blame it on your computer. If I call qwest if u even mention the word internet they send u to MSN anyways
