Xbox 360 sales increase 88 percent in June, give it US console crown for the month

Proving once again that in this world it's more important what you look like than what you do, the Xbox 360 has cruised to the title of best-selling console in June on the back of a sexy physical redesign. The latest numbers from NPD show that Microsoft shifted 451,700 units in the US, which ousts the Wii's tally of 422,500 and comfortably dwarfs the PS3's 304,800. Still, if Sony wants any consolation it need only look back to the results of its own console Slimmification last year -- US sales were said to have tripled in the immediate aftermath of the new SKU's release. So Microsoft might have a little bit of catching up to do yet, and let's not forget that the king of all hardware sales remains the DS, which somehow managed to sell more than half a million devices in June, in spite of the whole world and its dog already owning one.

From Kotaku:

We already knew that Microsoft was planning on offering a cheaper version of its new, smaller, glossier Xbox 360, but we didn't know much more about it. Thanks to Amazon Germany, now we know.

Microsoft documentation had previously outed a $199 USD Xbox 360 S at E3 2010, planned for a fall release. Amazon.de says that new console bundle will come with 4 GB of storage, presumably on either internal flash memory or via USB flash drive, not on a hard drive.

Amazon.de pegs the release of that new Xbox 360 Arcade bundle for August 20, right in the middle of this year's Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany. It also lists a price of ?149, about $189 USD. Look!

Don't be surprised, budget minded Xbox 360 owners, if Microsoft has an announcement soon.

Bam...that is some KICK ASS sales. The 360 has out sold the PS3 every month this year, and the $199 sku is right around the corner with the holiday's and Kinect. Might see some huge numbers this fall/winter.

So it took a 88% increase in sales to beat the PS3 by 150,000 units. Doesn't that mean that the PS3 has been selling better than the X360?

Yet the PS3 had an 85% increase as well, and is still behind by 150k? Me thinks you have fuzzy math :)
