Massiveterra
1. We should remember that this is Michael Pachter that is saying all this. The same person that said Wii HD is coming out in 2009. 2. If Activision leaves MS because MS will be unwilling to open up their platform for 3rd party subscriptions, it would be a lose-lose situation for everyone. People will find a new game. They always do. I personally predict that no other COD will have the same mainstream appeal as MW2. It's all downhill from here for that franchise. Ayepecks
Activision: Please follow Pachter's advice (not that you needed him to tell you with the likes of Kotick leading your company). I really want to see your downfall. Valve: <3 u for thinking about the consumers while still striving to make good business decisions and not listening to asshats like this. Lets hope those southerners have the same sentiments :p Huhhhhh?

I'll take that bet. I think this years CoD won't sell in the same leagues as MW2 but will still do very well. One more game before the well runs dry I reckon. He's also got things right before, especially very recently when he predicted MS would introduce a new media service at E3, and they did: ESPN. He also knew that there was going to be a new Twisted Metal & he stole Jaffe's thunder. And he knew Sony would introduce a premium service long before it was announced. But he is an analyst, not a fortune teller. Of course he's going to get things wrong sometimes.

In terms of when he has actually predicted things himself, he very rarely is right. I think Joystiq had a breakdown of all the analysts and how correct they were with their predictions, and I want to say he was right somewhere around 30% of the time. Geoffrey B. Veteran Posted July 16, 2010 Veteran Share Posted July 16, 2010 If you're on about WoW, nowhere in the interview did they even say they was thinking about it or that they had even talked about it. The question which was asked was a 'loaded' question to get a good responce they can use.. "do you think WoW would ever become free to play" and the answer Blizzard gave was "we havent talked it, we havent thought about it, but maybe in the future we could switch to free to play but supported by micro transactions.. but we currently have no plans for the future to do this'. So blizzard just said, its something we could do in the future but we havent even discussed it. WoW wont switch to free to play while it remains popular, it makes no sense to switch from a ?9-11 subscription based model which has 11million+ people paying, to free to play with micro transactions. No I was talking about D&D Online and a few other games that decided to be free to play. I know WoW wont be Free to play
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted July 16, 2010 Author Veteran Share Posted July 16, 2010 Out of the examples I gave only Twisted Metal would be a possible "leak". Even then Sony & Jaffe denied it time and time again, making Pachter look the fool. You could also argue that Hulu was another service along with ESPN that he saw coming. Some of the things he comes out with though are meant as a joke, then the next day some crap journalist picks it up on a slow news day and turns it into a serious topic which comes back to bite him. If you actually watch and listen to his comments over on the shows at GameTrailers the huge grin on his face and jest is pretty much the biggest give away he just likes to feed the trolls. sweetham
Go ahead and charge the subscription and have fun not seeing another dime out of my wallet. I am already on the fence about black ops and more so leaning forward the pass category every day. Try and pull a dumb **** EA move and charge more for a game I have already bought. I will be done with you. That is why I do not play MMOs and that is why I won't ever by a single EA game (new or used) that has the pay to play online cards if you buy the game used. As for Kotick's previous statement about the 60% of live users play CoD, most of them also play other online games as well. MW2 probably was not the sole decision to play online. Last I checked, I have been on xbox live since its beta on the original xbox and long before CoD ever thought of being popular on xbox live. Kotick needs to disappear from the gaming industry. Unfortunately I can see developers go this route and as soon as it does, it is goodbye to new games for me. I will play everything I own till I die or they shut the required services down to play them, whichever comes first. There is good business, and there is flat out consumer robbery, this is the latter.

I never said I was stating all of your examples were leaks, just that he's rarely right, and generally when he is it's because he knows the information for a fact due to his dealings with video game corporations. I've watched his comments and seen his face, but the fact remains -- when you're an analyst in the business, it's stupid to make predictions just to "feed the trolls." Some of the stuff he says on GameTrailers is tongue-in-cheek, yes, but that's not what we're referring to. I'm not saying he can't be right. I'm just saying that, more often than not, he's wrong. Edit: I can't find the Joystiq article right away, but here are all the articles featuring Pachter... it's amazing how many times he's wrong. Dead wrong. http://www.joystiq.com/tag/michael-pachter/
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted July 16, 2010 Author Veteran Share Posted July 16, 2010 Well for all we know Nintendo are working on a Wii HD and Pachter just got the wrong year. When you look at Nintendo's history in the portable market, is it really so hard to believe they'd start updating their home console too?
neoadorable
Activision can certainly charge for CoD online, i'll just never pay for it. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted July 16, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted July 16, 2010 MMO's are the only type of platforms that will ever succeed at charging you to play as a subscription. And an FPS game like COD can never have the type of depth anywhere near something like WoW.

M4nB3arP1g
My thoughts exactly, Sethos. How I long for the days where consoles weren't connected to the internet, games were actually released finished and polished with few glitches, and multiplayer was split screen. +1 Those where golden days of gaming for me. I am mainly a single player gamer, multiplayer is alright but I find many games now are multiplayer with bad singleplayer added on.
