Killzone 3 Completely Streamed, No Loading Screens

Recommended Posts

My my, how far we've come in terms of technology these days, even on consoles. Loading screens used to be standard in every game, with waiting 10-30 seconds to play ten more minutes before another loading screen was expected.

This generation changed that. From Call of Duty's four to six second load for online levels to Uncharted's cutscenes where the level is loaded in disguise, we've seen amazing stuff and now come to expect it.

Following the footsteps of its console exclusive brothers, Killzone 3 will not have those dreaded loading screens. And I could not have thought it would better for another game than this one (perhaps Modnation Racers can get some help too). Loading screens lasted 20-30 seconds in Killzone 2, even longer for multiplayer games. The cool 3D screens did distract us for a bit but often we sat there waiting for a turn to take on the Helghan.

Herman Hulst, the managing director at Sony's first party studio, Guerilla Games, has confirmed that Killzone 3 has come a long way technologically and an example of that is the omission of loading screens.

"We're excited what the PS3 can do for us and what we can do for it... (speaking of loading screens), literally everything is streamed now".

This can only be good news as we can expect a more story driven game from cutscenes and the ability to always keep being in the action.

From the article (emphasis mine):

Ain't that the truth. Wasn't that game suppose to be patched in the first week? My buddies and I are enjoying it, but damn, those load times need to be fixed.

Back on topic though, the Killzone 3 streaming is definitely cool stuff. I actually never noticed the lack of loading screens in Uncharted 2 when I played through it, although that's probably a good thing: the good loading times are the kind that you don't notice.

Man, so happy to hear this, the first Killzone (on Ps3) had that annoying freezing load screen that made me scared my PS3 had died. Guess no more heart attacks for me.

sweet, wish the Devs for ModNation would take note! I hate the thought of playing that game due to the load times.. but it's so fun :(

Doesn't GTA do this anyway?

What does GTA have to do with Killzone?

What does a game that loads during cutscenes have to do with a game that loads during cutscenes?

Depends on how it loads.

Surely the point is that they're achieving no loads with a game that graphically looks so good...

Not really, as the visual effects which Killzone consists of isn't the main culprit when it comes to loading; high resolution textures and level geometry / size is what matters. Killzone 2 was touted

to have some huge levels but since the engine is a heavy streaming engine, it doesn't need to load up 95% of the level from the get-go. The game has a huge amount of low resolution textures so they

aren't taking up much space either - It just serves the required data into the memory as the cutscene is played and when it ends, bam you are ready.
