Smirnoff

Has anyone ever typed Smirnoff into their phone on predictive text?

If you haven't got a phone handy highlight this:

Smirnoff=Poisoned

I wonder if anyone at the marketing department has discovered this?

On a cell phone, you can set it up so it guesses what word you're trying to type. Type in "smirnoff" without helping it select letters and you get "poisoned". Interesting ... not really funny.

Well, it is made up of the same numbers (76476633)... And I don't see any good reason why a phone company would program the word Smirnoff into their phone. Poisoned is a real word, Smirnoff is a brand name.

The joke is that predictive text should suggest something starting with smir or smi or sm even instead of suggesting poisoned.

Basically, if you dial smirnoff you'll be dialing the same numbers as if you dialed poisoned... on any phone. Predictive text on a cell phone is just a way to make it easier to type (ie hitting each number once instead of one, two, or three times).

Ok... Lemme explain this feature to some people... On some phones (mine included) there is a feature to guess what word you're typing in with the numpad... This is used when you're sending text messages. It works by taking the numbers you inputted, and finding all the possible combinations of letters that could be made by those numbers, then comparing each of those combinations to a dictionary stored in the phone, and listing all the words it could possibly be and letting you choose it.

Example: You want to type 'Hello'

The hard way - You begin by pressing 4, but because 'h' is the second letter on 4, you have to press it twice, then wait for it to acknowledge that you want to continue on to the next letter. You then press 3 twice for the letter 'e'. You then wait again. You then press 5 thrice for the letter 'l', and wait, and do it again for the second 'l'. You then wait once more, and press 6 thrice for the 'o'.

The easy way - You press 43556 rapidly. The phone calculates all the possibilities for this combination. It could be

gdjjm

gdjjn

gdjjo

gdjkm

gdjkn

gdjko

gdjlm

or any of hundreds, or even thousands more combinations... All of these combinations are compared to a dictionary to see if they are a real word. The phone has found, out of all those, 4 that match in the dictionary some way or another, and lists these to you - "hello","hellm","helln","hell6". You then easily choose "hello" as the word you want. Done.

Oh well that went down like a lead balloon, a few mates and I just thought it was a funny coincidence that Smirnoff (vodka) comes out as poisoned when so many people (mainly in teenage years) have been poisoned by over indulgence in said same vodka. Especially with the current advertising campaign for taking it easy with the stuff.
