Sethos
Sound like it was dropped, something has hit the home button hard or you have something stuck in there lol. Since you were buying a new one did you try taking it apart to see if you could fix it? I didn't drop it, believe me and I ain't buying a new one - No way in hell. I'd rather throw the money off a bridge.
Salty Wagyu
I have a PS3 slim bought last month and have a feeling it might be faulty because I get frame rate drops in almost every game/demo I try, even programmes on bbc iplayer have some judder. I've been away from the console scene for a long time but if this is normal then it goes against my thinking that consoles are good for getting away from PCs that have hardware issues and frame drops. Valkyria Chronicles: a night-time mission with fog and searchlights made it slow to a crawl. Smoke in other missions have some noticeable slowdown. God of War 3 demo: Not quite sure but it feels like I'm seeing it run in a constant framerate that just doesn't feel right. Red Baron demo: slowed to a crawl in a big air fight, was unplayable to say the least. Red Dead Redemption: similar to god of war, moving/looking around towns feels a bit "slow". blur demo: switching cars in the garage feels very laggy, similar in WipeoutHD demo as well but not as bad. Is this normal then?
BGM
mines fine.. it's a UK launch day unit, no issues here! :)
Sikh
It's not even the battery, the thing is like stuck sending the PS Home button signal. It'll switch on the PS3 by itself, when on the XMB it'll just go back and forth between the "Turn off console / Reassign controller" screen and switching off the PS3 will leave the controller blinking away until it's out of power. Pretty amazing considering I've used my PS3 less than my purple socks. Lmao, great comparison. Also sad it broke that easy. I hope your not buying another one. I had a 60GB original unit which I sold to a friend and bought myself the 40GB as soon as they came out. So I'd say November 2007? I didn't abuse it or anything, was kept in a ventilated area, not enclosed or anything. I did play it alot, almost an hour or two per day I'd say. Basically crapped out while watching a movie. It froze and then never really turned back on. Sikh, you said you fix them? Is it worth getting fixed? I'm thinking **** it and just buy a new Slim with extended warranty. My original fat PS2 is still running strong today...sad to say it's outlasted my PS3 by like 5 years already lol. This is the first console that has actually broken on me. My old SNES still works, Sega Genesis still works, and N64 is still working perfect too. Its worth fixing, but depends on the person. I really BADLY wanted a 60gb BC, but didnt wanna pay more then $400 for it, but by then, no more. So i scoured work for one and came in for 349.99$ used. THING WAS TURNED ON 11 times. The guy who bought it was a trucker and left it home, but ended up not playing it and was moving out, so he sold it to us(GS). I almost picked it up, but i was hard on money at that time so i let it go. Then I got this one, perfect condition besides the normal "dust" scratches. Other then that everything was good on it, worked the hell out of it(reparing) in 1 week and finally got it to work. Ever since then its been working, so about 4 months now because I fixed it back march i believe, not too sure, but it was in the beginning of this year. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted July 18, 2010 Veteran Share Posted July 18, 2010 Mine refuses to die, instead it just wants to bug me with it's incredibly loud fan for no reason. Apparently XMB is CPU intensive  How is it this generation of machines (excluding the Wii) seem to crap out so quickly? The Wii has it's own issues, but they aren't as wide spread as the PS3 or 360. They have DVD issues and PSU issues.
danisflying527
The WII is a gamecube. Nothing really impressive inside that system or anything powerful that would cause stress/heat on the motherboard and etc. Older systems are alive because they were "basic" technology. Systems now a days are f'ing computers and require adequate cooling, thermal measures, etc. The wii, you can wrap in a blanket and it still works(believe me ive done it to 5 wii's). If the ps3 is such an awesome computer how can I have managed to overclock my CPU in the sig and my machine is running on a stock cooler and runs much higher graphical quality game than a ps3. Btw coolers evolve withe technology, any cooler even 5 years old should easily run a ps3s old an tainted hardware...

Jimmy0
40GB model. CECHG04. My original PS3 (still the 40GB model) was just normal and quiet, but then it YLOD and the refurb'd one they sent back sounds like a jet engine.
Sethos
Mine's also a jet engine. I can't believe people were taking the mickey out of the 360 for pure noise when the PS3 was capable of that kinda noise :|
SkyDX
My PS3 is 80GB phat non BC and a year old, still running fine. Just these dammed 2.5" HDDs are so expensive >.<

WelshBluebird
Yeah I know the Wii is OC'd gamecube but man I expected the PS3 at least to last just as long as its predecessor.. The old PS2's had quite lot of problems too. Infact, Sony had a class action lawsuit filed against them about it, and apparently settled it giving affected people compensation. http://uk.gamespot.com/ps2/driving/jakx/news.html?sid=6139482 I don't think this generation is that much worse than the past. Its just because of the Internet, we hear a lot more about it.

Nick H. Supervisor Posted July 18, 2010 Supervisor Share Posted July 18, 2010 Mine PS3's fan starts going crazy after about 5 minutes of gaming. I'm putting that down to the very warm temperatures we've got here though. But I wouldn't be surprised if it craps out on me sometime in the next couple of months. +Anarkii Subscriber² Posted July 18, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted July 18, 2010 My original 60gb was running fine, but swapped it for slim (and got a good $500 AU for it since it had PS2 compatability) Was a happy camper :) (I never play PS2 anymore thats why I swapped it)

Sethos
You told me you don't use it, and don't really care. :p It's like buying a wrist watch that can go underwater to a depth of 1000ft or families buying off-roaders, people rarely use those functions but you still want them. True, but he was asking me how much I thought he could get for it if he traded it in, and I asked what model it was and he said an phat with BC, and he said he never used it nor cared, so I keep telling him to trade it in then, not that he ever listens to me anyway, lol. At least then we wont get a tweet everyday about how loud it is. :p Though he did just spend like an hour moaning about his PS3 controller being broken and the sixaxis not working when he found out you had to hold R1 and L1 to use use it to turn the handle in K2 with it.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted July 18, 2010 Veteran Share Posted July 18, 2010 I was talking about the PS3 on the whole when I said I never used it :p Not BC specifically And yeah the controller is ****ing me off, but the KZ2 thing was my fault :p That doesn't excuse it from just dying for no reason and making me turn the PS3 off etc etc
