Anyone else PS3 on last legs?

Tbf I haven't played the SP since 2009 and there is no on screen instructions. I've played way too many games since then to remember one stupid control :p

The loud fan noise is normal, it's to prevent system over-heating. Mines does it often (even every time I play on it) on summer and almost never on winter. Noise is annoying indeed but must be necessary at the same time

Oh so that's what the fan is for, I was like "Why the hell isn't this thing making coffee!" - Boy I feel silly now. Thank you for clarifying.

By the way, a fan isn't meant to make that much noise with so little hot air to move. The fan is just a poor quality product that has a too high RPM compared to the CFM and it

degrades really fast, I had my PS3 less than a year before it began making a ton of noise. It was fairly silent before that even under load.

The Wii is not a gamecube. Sorry for being captain f*cking obvious but still, its not.

ok troll.

But to break it down for you it does

everything a game cube does and add motion sensing.

You want a cookie? Everyone sensible knows it's nothing "new" besides motion sensing.

really? None of us knew that. I just thought it was some plastic that was recycled put together in a fan shape and then powered so it can spin and make noise for no apparent reason.

Thanks for clearing it up for all of us n00bs

If the ps3 is such an awesome computer how can I have managed to overclock my CPU in the sig and my machine is running on a stock cooler and runs much higher graphical quality game than a ps3. Btw coolers evolve withe technology, any cooler even 5 years old should easily run a ps3s old an tainted hardware...

are you confused? I said there BEING BUILT LIKE COMPUTERS. Do you understand that consoles now a days have 3 or 8 processors? Xbox has 3 and ps3 has 8cell.

They also require Strong cooling in a sma design and companies battle with the idea of "is it gonna be well ventilated/half asses/ on carpet/ etc". Older consoles could be put anywhere and they ran beautiful. I always had my nes/snes on the carpet.

But newer consoles don't work like that. Neither company has found the best cooling yet. I liked the new xbox's cooling but they should of added more fans besides the one above the chips.

Point being I never directly compared PCs and consoles. I'm a PC gamer and I know we will always be ahead of the game because consoles are suppose to be one price point and cater to everyone and be the same. Each PC is different and can handle as much as you can push it.

/offtopic

but I believe crysis 2 will be one of the best games out to show the power of both consoles and then PC.

You spent $1k on your PS3? :|

That's Australian dollars. Although I think it's pretty over-priced there even taking that into account. But it's at least partly due to the high cost associated with selling something like the PS3 in Australia/New Zealand - i.e. getting out there and to all the relevant places in such a huge country, language stuff, laws etc

The audio kept cutting out when I was playing Heavy Rain yesterday. Not sure if that's a fault of the game or the system, but the disc is in perfect condition and I replaced the laser unit back in February.

I'd like to upgrade to a Slim, but I just can't justify it for the amount of use it would get.

I lol'd

But even still, summer in Scotland isn't exactly hot. My ps3 is like this the whole time, no matter what the temp is or what I'm using the PS3 for.

Yeah I knew it was AUS $ but flipping hell, didn't think it cost them over a grand! That's ridiculous.

Picked up a Slim this morning. Its just not the same as the fat PS3. It feels faster in some areas and slower in others, although gaming seems the same.

I have a launch unit going strong. (I did run through a controller. I played it so much, had to buy a new one) Clocked tons of hours of gameplay. Passed in onto my cousin when I got a Slim. Now he's playing tons of Dragon Age on it (rpg freak) and still runs like it did out the box. We also watch tons of movies (stream/dvd/blu) on it as well. Didn't play any ps2 games on it, as I still have my modded (not slim) ps2.

Neither of us smoke nor have in-house pets, and central air conditioning so... these units should last many years to come.

I miss my phatty...

How is it this generation of machines (excluding the Wii) seem to crap out so quickly?

Actually, the there has been cases of the wii overheating from running in standby mode.

I don't know anything about ps3, but the 360 was terribly designed. Too much stuff crammed in.

The gpu was directly under the dvd drive. The cpu had a decent heatsink on it, but the only fans on the thing were in the back and they barely drew any air into it. If you put the thing next to a wall I'd probably just recycle the same hot air. The orignal xbox was huge, but the thing is a tank. I'd much rather a bigger console that doesn't die.

Seems like the 60gb PS3's are the ones to go, almost everyone I hear complain about their PS3's dying have been the 60gb version.

Not surprising really...it's the launch unit and in fact the first of its kind since the European launch unit is different to the US and Japanese ones (because it has partial software emulation for PS2 games, vs. full PS2 hardware in the US/Jap models).

Still not ok with it though...where I keep my PS3 is spotless, well ventilated etc so I'm not impressed when something dies within/around 3 years.

The old PS2's had quite lot of problems too.

Infact, Sony had a class action lawsuit filed against them about it, and apparently settled it giving affected people compensation.

I don't think this generation is that much worse than the past. Its just because of the Internet, we hear a lot more about it.

That makes sense.

Yep, and thats not me overpricing just what they cost on launch.. :pinch: PS2 was also $1,000 at launch Sony screw us with pricing on consoles. Atleast the basic PS3 slim package is down to $500

My brother still has his release model PS3, and its alive and kickin'. Never had an issue with it. I brought mine in the second year of the PS3's release, and again, I've not had any issues either.

So it seems like i should be worried about my 60GB launch unit...although i don't seem to be seeing any problems with it apart from the loud fan.
